Fix slow Internet browsing on your computer with Norton product installed

One of the most common reasons for slow web browsing is a slow internet connection. First, run speed tests to ensure that you have a fast internet connection.

It is also important to identify if the overall browsing experience is slow or is it just with a particular website. If you are experiencing issues with a particular website, it is more likely that the issue is with the website and not the browser.

Some of the other common causes of the problem with slow web browsing or web browser taking a long time start could be:

  • Cluttered temporary Internet files

  • Malware infection

  • Unwanted browser add-ons or extensions

  • Weak WiFi signal

  • Multiple browser sessions

  • Multiple security products

Here are some tips and best practices to improve your browsing experience:

Windows

Remove unwanted browser extensions or add-ons

  1. Start your browser.

  2. Depending on your browser, do one of the following:

    • For Microsoft Edge: On the top-right corner, click Settings and more, and then click Extensions.

    • For Mozilla Firefox: On the top-right corner, click the Open menu icon , and click Add-ons. In the Add-ons Manager page, select Extensions.
    • For Google Chrome: On the top-right corner, click the Customize and control Google Chrome icon, and click Settings. On the Extensions tab, click Extensions.
  3. Select the add-ons one at a time and disable them.

    If the Internet speeds up after disabling a particular add-on, then keep it disabled.

Delete temporary Internet files

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

    If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. Double-click Performance, and then click File Cleanup.

  3. After the temporary files are removed, click Close.

Uninstall any non-Norton security product

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    appwiz.cpl
  3. In the list of currently installed programs, select the non-Norton security product, and then click Uninstall or Remove.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  5. When the uninstall completes, restart the computer.

Download and run Norton Power Eraser

Mac

Remove unwanted browser extensions

  1. Start your browser.

  2. Depending on your browser, do one of the following:

    • For Safari: On the menu bar, from the Safari menu, select Preferences, and then click the Extensions tab. de-select the Enable option.

    • For Mozilla Firefox: On the top-right corner, click the Open menu icon , and click Add-ons. In the Add-ons Manager page, select Extensions.
    • For Google Chrome: On the top-right corner, click the Customize and control Google Chrome icon, and click Settings. Under Chrome, click Extensions.
  3. Select the add-ons one at a time and disable them.

  4. If disabling the extension fixes the problem, return to the Extensions preferences and check for and install any updates available for the extensions.

    If the problem persists, in the Extensions window, select the extension and click Uninstall.

Run a Quick Scan

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

  2. In the Norton product main window, click Scans.

  3. In the left pane, click Quick Scan, and then click Start a Quick Scan.

    Wait for the scan to complete.

Restart your computer

  1. Exit all programs.

  2. Restart your computer.
