Troubleshooting suspected malware on your iOS device

While iOS devices are generally considered secure, they are not immune to malware. If your device is acting strangely, such as crashing apps, draining battery, or showing unexpected pop-ups, it is worth checking for signs of infection and taking steps to clean it up. In rare cases, it may mean that the device has been hacked.

Although Apple’s iOS ecosystem includes strong security features like app vetting, memory protection, and frequent updates, malware and viruses can still find their way in, especially if the device is jailbroken or if apps are downloaded from unofficial sources.

Signs your iOS device might be infected

Here are some symptoms that could indicate a virus on your device:

  • Unfamiliar apps you do not remember installing
  • Rapid battery drain or overheating
  • Unusual spikes in mobile data usage
  • Frequent browser pop-ups, especially fake virus alerts
  • Performance issues, like lag or slow loading

To remove malware or a virus from your iOS device, follow the series of steps presented below:

1. Restart your iOS device

A simple reboot can temporarily disable some types of malware or background processes. This will not remove malware permanently, but it is a good first step to stop suspicious activity.

To restart your iOS device:

  1. Press and hold the side button and volume button until the power slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider to turn off your iOS device.
  3. Wait a few seconds, then press and hold the side button again until the Apple logo appears.

2. Delete suspicious apps

Uninstall any apps you do not recognize or that were recently installed before the issues began.

To delete an app:

  1. Tap and hold the app icon until a menu appears.
  2. Select Remove App, then tap Delete App to confirm.

Look out for apps that:

  • Drain battery unusually fast
  • Use excessive mobile data
  • Display intrusive ads or pop-ups

3. Clear browser history and cache

Malicious scripts or redirects can hide in your browser data. Clearing it helps remove these threats.

Note: Clearing cookies may sign you out of websites and remove the saved login credentials. Use a password manager to avoid losing login credentials.

Depending on your browser, refer to the following support pages for instructions:

If you use a different browser, search for instructions on their support pages.

4. Install the latest iOS update

Apple regularly releases security patches that fix known vulnerabilities.

To update your iOS version:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. If an update is available, tap Download and Install.

Make sure your device is connected to Wi-Fi and has enough battery or is plugged in.

5. Restore from a clean backup

If the issue started recently, restoring from a backup made before the symptoms appeared can help.

To restore your iOS device from a clean backup:

Note: Ensure the backup you choose is from a time when your device was functioning normally.

  1. Connect your iOS device to a computer or use iCloud.
  2. Erase your device via Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
  3. Follow the prompts to restore from a previous backup.

6. Complete a factory reset

Important: A factory reset erases all your data, settings, and installed applications from your device. Your device will be restored to the original state as when it was new from the factory. Ensure you back up your data before completing the steps below.

If issues with your device persist, factory reset your iOS device:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  1. Tap Erase All Content and Settings, then confirm.

After the reset, set up your iOS device as new or restore from a clean backup.

7. Continue following best practices

  • Use antivirus software like Norton 360 for IOS to scan and protect your device in real time.

Tip: For detailed installation instructions, refer to the following article: Download and install Norton 360 app on your mobile device.

  • Avoid jailbreaking your device as it disables key security features.
  • Only download apps directly from the App Store.
  • Be cautious with links in emails or texts, even from known contacts.
