Fix problem of insufficient disk space while installing product updates

Instructions in this article apply to the Norton products running on version 22.x and older. Do not refer to this article if your product version is 24.x or later.

We have detected insufficient disk space in your device. Your Norton product cannot complete an update due to this. Not receiving critical updates may leave your device vulnerable to security threats.

We recommend you to have a minimum of 3 GB of free space to help complete installing the updates and ensure you stay protected.

Follow the instructions below to help resolve this issue.

STEP 1

Clean up unwanted files and system junk

From your existing Norton device security product, run File Cleanup. For instructions, see Remove unwanted files with File Cleanup.

STEP 2

Empty the Recycle Bin

  1. Locate the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop and open it.

  2. Review the items in the Recycle Bin.

If you want to restore any specific item, right-click the item and choose Restore from the context menu.

  3. Right-click anywhere in the Recycle Bin window and select Empty Recycle Bin from the context menu.

  4. In the confirmation window, click Yes.

STEP 3

Uninstall unwanted programs

  1. Open the Control Panel and navigate to Programs > Programs and Features.

  2. For each unwanted program that you no longer need, do the following:

    • Select the program and click Uninstall.

    • Follow the on-screen instructions and uninstall the program.

STEP 4

Identify and delete large files in the Downloads and Documents folders

  1. Press the Windows + E keys to open the File Explorer window.

  2. Go to the Downloads folder.

  3. Identify the large files that are no longer needed and delete them.

  4. Go to the Documents folder.

  5. Identify the large files that are no longer needed and delete them.

  6. Go to Step 2 to empty the Recycle Bin.

Tip: If your subscription plan includes Norton Utilities Ultimate and you have the app installed in the device, you can perform all the above steps seamlessly from the Norton Utilities Ultimate app. For instructions, see:
