Norton Password Manager extension locks every time I close Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser

If you want to keep your Norton Password Manager vault open, see Keep my vault open in Norton Password Manager extension.

Your Norton Password Manager extension will get locked every time you close your Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser. This is because the latest Norton Password Manager extension is developed using the Manifestv3 platform.

Earlier versions of Norton Password Manager extension was built on Manifestv2 Platform.

Google Chrome recommends extension developers to use Manifestv3 platform before June 2024. To know more about Manifestv3 platform, read this article.

Failing to migrate to Manifestv3 platform will disable our extension and will not be functional on Google Chrome.

Microsoft Edge already supports Manifestv3 platform and soon, Microsoft Edge may recommend extension developers to start using the same. For more information, read this article.

How does Manifestv3 impact our extension

If an extension migrates to Manifestv3 platform, it cannot leverage running on background capability of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser.

So, when all the open instances of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browsers are closed, then your Norton Password Manager vault will be locked. Re-launching the browsers will require you to unlock your vault using your vault password.

What was the behavior before the extension update?

The Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed setting option is turned ON by default on Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers. Depending on your browser, open one of the following to access this option:

Google Chrome

In the earlier versions of Norton Password Manager extension, the Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed setting option was turned ON by default.

  1. Open Google Chrome.

  2. Click Customize and Control Google Chrome icon on the top-right corner of the screen.

  3. Click Settings.

  4. In the Settings page, click System.

Under the System page, you will find the Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed option enabled.

This option allows browsers extensions and apps to run in the background even when all instances of Google Chrome are closed. Similarly, this option allowed Norton Password Manager extension to keep the vault open even if all the instances of Google Chrome were closed.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.

  2. Click Settings and more (Alt +F) icon on the top-right corner of the screen.

  3. Click Settings.

  4. In the Settings page, click System and performance on the left-side of the screen.

Under the System page, you will find the Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed option enabled.

This option allows browser extensions and apps to run in the background even when all instances of Microsoft Edge are closed. Similarly, this option allowed Norton Password Manager extension to keep the vault open even if all the instances of Microsoft Edge were closed.

If you are not comfortable with entering your Vault password every time you open Google Chrome, we suggest you to setup Passwordless vault lock. Read Setup Passwordless Vault Unlock for Norton Password Manager to know more.
