Configure Norton VPN settings

Choose from the below options to configure your Norton VPN settings.

Ad Tracker Blocking

To know how to configure Ad Tracker Blocking in Norton VPN, refer to Use Ad Tracker Blocking in your VPN product to block targeted advertisements.

Automatically Turn on VPN

The Automatically Turn on VPN feature safeguards your data when connecting to public networks and hides your real identity and keeps your P2P file sharing activities private.

To enable the Automatically Turn on VPN feature, refer to Turn on Norton VPN automatically on your Windows and Mac device

Show Notifications

To know the version number of your Norton product, open your Norton product and navigate to Settings. 

Norton 360 (version 24.x and above)

  1. Open Norton 360 on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, click Privacy on the left-side of the window.

  3. In the Privacy window, under Secure VPN, click Open.

  4. In the Secure VPN window, click the Settings tab.

  5. In the Settings tab, under VPN Preferences, move the slider to enable the following under Show Notifications:

    • When your VPN is turned on and off
    • When connected to untrusted networks

Split Tunneling

The Split Tunneling feature lets you exclude some of your apps from the VPN channel while other apps access the Internet directly.

To enable the Split Tunneling feature, refer to Enable Split Tunneling in Norton VPN to manage your Internet traffic

Kill Switch

Kill Switch automatically disconnects your device from the Internet should your VPN get disconnected. This helps maintain the privacy of your IP address (key to identifying your location and online activities) and other personal information should the VPN connection drop.

To use the Kill Switch feature, refer to Enable Kill Switch to block your Internet connection if VPN gets disconnected.

Reconnect after restarting

The Reconnect after restarting feature allows you to automatically reconnect your VPN after restarting your device for continuous protection. Depending on your product, choose one of the following to enable the reconnect after restarting option.

Access local devices with VPN

The access local devices with VPN feature allows access to local devices like printers and shared devices on private networks. To use this feature, follow the steps below:

  1. Open Norton VPN on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, do one of the following, depending on your VPN plan:

    • Norton VPN Standard: Click VPN Preferences tab and move the slider to turn on Enable local device access when using VPN.

    • Norton VPN Plus/Ultimate: Click Settings. In the VPN Preferences tab, move the slider to enable Access local devices when using VPN

Enable multiple active VPNs

The enable multiple active VPN feature allows you to enable Norton VPN even if another VPN product is active on your computer. To enable multiple active VPNs option, follow the below steps:

Norton VPN

  1. Open Norton VPN on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, do one of the following, depending on your VPN plan:

    • Norton VPN Standard: Click VPN Preferences tab and move the slider to turn on Enable multiple active VPNs.

    • Norton VPN Plus/Ultimate: Click Settings. In the VPN Preferences tab, move the slider to enable Enable multiple active VPNs

VPN protocol settings

VPN protocols are a set of rules that inform how data is going to be transmitted from your computer. Depending on your product, choose one of the following to configure VPN protocols.

  1. Open Norton VPN app on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, do one of the following, depending on your VPN plan:

    • Norton VPN Standard: Click the VPN Preferences tab and choose one of the following protocols: 

      • Automatic (recommended)

      • WireGuard

      • Mimic

      • OpenVPN (TCP)

      • OpenVPN (UDP)

    • Norton VPN Plus/Ultimate: Click Settings. In the Settings window,  choose one of the following protocols:

      • Automatic (recommended)

      • WireGuard

      • Mimic

      • OpenVPN (TCP)

      • OpenVPN (UDP)

Change App language

You can change the app language from your settings page in your VPN product. To change the language, follow the below steps:

  1. Open Norton VPN app on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, on the left pane, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, in the General tab, next to language, click the drop-down to choose the language of your choice.

Show Notifications

The Show Notifications option notifies you when your VPN is turned on or off or when your computer is connected to public networks. To use this feature, depending on your product, choose one of the following:

To know the version number of your Norton product, open your Norton app and navigate to Settings.
  1. Open Norton VPN app on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, on the left pane, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, next to Show Notifications, move the slider of the following options to turn on Notifications:

    • When VPN is turned on or off

    • When connected to Public networks

Product Tamper Protection

The Product Tamper Protection feature prevents other users and external applications from altering the Norton application. To use this feature, follow the steps below:

  1. Open Norton VPN app on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, on the left pane, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, in the General tab, move the slider to enable Product Tamper Protection.

Protect Norton settings with a password

This feature requests for a password when you want to enter the settings of your Norton application. To use this feature, follow the steps below:

  1. Open Norton VPN app on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, on the left pane, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, in the General tab, next to protect Norton settings with a password, click Create Password.

  4. In the Change password window, enter the password and click Create.

Remote Management

The Remote Management feature sends the health status of your device and other information to the My Norton portal. You can use the My Norton portal to manage your Norton products and fix some protection issues. To use this feature, follow the steps:

  1. Open Norton VPN app on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, on the left pane, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, in the General tab, move the slider to enable Remote Management.

App Permissions

The App Permissions tab in the Settings window allows you to add app permissions to allow or block apps for some certain features. To use the app permissions feature, follow the steps:

  1. Open Norton VPN app on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, on the left pane, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, click the App permissions tab.

  4. In the App permissions tab, click Add Application.

  5. In the Add app permission window, select the app that you want to always allow or block from accessing your protected folders and click Done.

    To remove an app that was added in the app permissions tab, click Remove app on the App permissions tab.

Reset all settings

The Reset all settings feature restores all Norton settings and profiles to their default values.

  1. Open Norton VPN app on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, on the left pane, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, in the Troubleshooting tab, next to Reset all settings, click Reset to Default.

    In the Reset all settings window, click Yes, reset.

Repair Norton

If you are not able to fix the problems that you encounter in Norton, you can use the Repair Norton feature. To use this feature, follow the steps:

  1. Open Norton VPN app on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, on the left pane, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, in the Troubleshooting tab, next to Still having problems?, click Repair Norton.

    In the Repair Norton window, click Yes.

Log a performance problem

If Norton is slowing down your device or if it is impacting your performance, you can create a log of your device's performance. To log the performance of your device, follow the steps:

  1. Open Norton VPN app on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, on the left pane, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, in the Troubleshooting tab, next to Log a performance problem, click Create Log.

    In the Ready to start recording? window, describe your problem and click Start Recording.

Enable debug logs

Debug logs allow you to record more information about your device's performance and your Norton application and helps you to diagnose any problems:

  1. Open Norton VPN app on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, on the left pane, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, in the Troubleshooting tab, move the slider to turn on Enable debug logs.
