Norton device security app displays the " Turn on the login items...” message on Mac

You see this message on your Norton device security app if you have manually disabled the Norton device security app from the Allow in the Background section on your Mac.

When you install the Norton device security app on your Mac, it is automatically enabled in the Allow in the Background section. The Norton device security app relies on background access to:

  • Deliver real-time protection against threats

  • Install critical security updates

  • Monitor system activity for potential risks

  • Update License Information

The Login Items and Extensions feature on your macOS (Ventura) or later includes a feature called Allow in the Background, which allows you to control the background activity of the applications installed on your Mac. With the previous versions of macOS (macOS Monterey 12.x or earlier), the installed applications are always allowed to perform the background tasks.

To remain protected, you always need to keep the Norton device security app enabled in the Allow in the Background section of your macOS settings.

  1. On the Norton device security app main window, click Open or click Open Settings from the alert.

  2. Click General on the left panel and click Login Items and Extensions on the right panel.

  3. Under the Allow in the Background section, next to NortonLifeLock, Inc. or Norton 360, click the grey slider to enable and allow Norton to perform the background tasks.

  4. When prompted, type your Mac administrator account password and click Modify Settings.
