Fix Internet connectivity problem with an app or a program after connecting to Norton VPN

Certain applications restrict or block the use of VPNs in order to enforce security policies and adhere to geo-restriction requirements, thereby limiting access from unauthorized locations.

To fix this issue, connect your computer or your mobile device to a different VPN region.

Connect to a different VPN region

Depending on your operating system, choose one of the following:

Windows

If you are using Norton VPN Standard (version 6.x and below), you need to download and install the latest version of Norton VPN. To know more, read Download and install Norton VPN.

Depending on your product, choose one of the following:

Norton VPN

  1. Open Norton VPN on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, do one of the following, depending on your VPN plan:

    • Norton VPN Standard: Click Connection > Change Location, then select a different country or city from the drop-down list.

    • Norton VPN Plus/Ultimate: Select a different country or city from the drop-down list.

      You can also use the search box to find a country or city to connect.

      The Recent section lists the most recent VPN regions you have connected to.

To choose a specific city, click the drop-down list present next to the country.

Norton 360

  1. Open Norton 360.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, click Privacy on the left side of the window.

  3. In the Privacy window, under Secure VPN, click Open.

  4. In the Secure VPN window, under the Connection tab, click Change Location.

  5. In the Change VPN location window, select a different country or city from the drop-down list.

Mac

If you are using Norton VPN (version 2.x and below), you need to download and install the latest version of Norton VPN. To know more, read Download and Install Norton device product on Mac.

Depending on your product, choose one of the following:

Norton VPN

  1. Open Norton VPN on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, do one of the following, depending on your VPN plan:

    • Norton VPN Standard: Click Connection > Change Location, and then select a different country or city from the drop-down list.

    • Norton VPN Plus/Ultimate: Select a different country or city from the drop-down list.

      You can also use the search box to find a country or city to connect.

      The Recent section lists the most recent VPN regions you have connected to.

Norton 360

  1. Open Norton 360.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, click Privacy on the left side of the window.

  3. In the Privacy window, under Secure VPN, click Open.

  4. In the Secure VPN window, under the Connection tab, click Change Location.

  5. In the Change VPN location window, select a different country from the drop-down list.

Android

Depending on your product, choose one of the following:

Norton VPN

  1. Launch Norton VPN.

  2. On the Norton Secure VPN screen, tap the drop-down list next to Fastest location.

  3. On the Fastest location screen, select the geographic region you want from the list.

Norton 360

  1. Launch Norton 360.

  2. At the bottom of the main screen, tap Menu and then tap VPN.

  3. Tap the drop-down list next to Fastest location and then select the geographic region you want from the list.

iOS

Depending on your product, choose one of the following:

Norton VPN

  1. Launch Norton VPN.

  2. On the Norton VPN screen, tap the drop-down list next to Fastest location.

  3. On the Change your location screen, select the geographic region that you want from the drop-down list.

Norton 360

  1. Launch Norton 360.

  2. On the Norton VPN screen, tap the drop-down list next to Fastest location.

  3. On the Change your location screen, select the geographic region that you want from the drop-down list.

If the issue persists, connect your VPN to a different protocol. To change your VPN protocol setting, depending on your operating system, choose one of the following:

The following VPN protocol steps are applicable only for Norton VPN. You can ignore this step if you are using Norton 360. 

Windows

If you are using Norton VPN Standard (version 6.x and below), you need to download and install the latest version of Norton VPN. To know more, read Download and install Norton VPN.
  1. Open Norton VPN app on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, do one of the following, depending on your VPN plan:

    • Norton VPN Standard: Click the VPN Preferences tab and choose one of the following protocols: 

      • Automatic (recommended)

      • WireGuard

      • Mimic

      • OpenVPN

    • Norton VPN Plus/Ultimate: Click Settings. In the Settings window, choose one of the following protocols:

      • Automatic (recommended)

      • WireGuard

      • Mimic

      • OpenVPN

Mac

If you are using Norton VPN Standard (version 2.x and below), you need to download and install the latest version of Norton VPN. To know more, read Download and install Norton VPN.

Norton VPN

  1. Open Norton VPN app on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, do one of the following, depending on your VPN plan:

    • Norton VPN Standard: Click the VPN Preferences tab and choose one of the following protocols: 

      • Automatic (recommended)

      • IPSec

      • Mimic

    • Norton VPN Plus/Ultimate: Click Settings. In the Settings window,  choose one of the following protocols:

      • Automatic (recommended)

      • IPSec

      • Mimic

Android

Norton VPN

  1. Launch Norton VPN.

  2. Tap the Settings icon on the top-right corner of the screen.

  3. In the VPN Preferences screen, tap VPN Protocol Settings.

  4. In the VPN Protocol screen, you can choose one of the following protocols:

    • Automatic (recommended)

    • WireGuard

    • OpenVPN

    • Mimic

iOS

Norton VPN

  1. Launch Norton VPN.

  2. Tap the Settings icon on the top-right corner of the screen.

  3. In the VPN Preferences screen, tap Advanced Settings.

  4. In the Advanced Settings screen, you can tap one of the following protocols:

    • IPSec

    • Mimic

You may also encounter issues logging in to certain apps or programs with VPN enabled. If you face such issues, log in to the respective app and then turn on the VPN.

Log in to your app or program and turn on Norton VPN

  1. Open Norton VPN.

  2. Depending on your operating system, choose one of the following:

    • On Windows and Mac: On the Norton dashboard, move the toggle to disable VPN.

    • On Android and iOS: On the main screen, move the toggle to disable VPN.

  3. Launch the app or program in which you faced login issues and sign in to the app or program.

  4. Open Norton VPN.

  5. Connect to your desired country and access the app or program.

If the issue persists, use Split Tunneling in Norton VPN to exclude any application traffic from passing through VPN. You can enable this feature to exclude your email application.

The Split Tunneling feature is only available on Windows and Android. You can ignore this step if you are using Mac or iOS.

Windows

If you are using Norton VPN Standard (version 6.x and below), you need to download and install the latest version of Norton VPN. To know more, read Download and install Norton VPN.

Depending on your product, choose one of the following:

Norton VPN

  1. Open Norton VPN on your desktop.

  2. On the Norton dashboard, do one of the following, depending on your VPN plan:

    • Norton VPN Standard: Click VPN Preferences and move the slider to enable VPN split Tunneling.

    • Norton VPN Plus/Ultimate: Click Settings. In the Settings window, move the slider to Enable VPN split tunneling.

  3. To exclude apps from using VPN traffic, click Manage Apps under Split Tunneling.

    In the window that appears, click Add Application and follow the on-screen instructions to exclude an app.

To remove an app from the exclusion list, in the Exclude specific apps from VPN screen, click Remove next to the app that needs to be removed from the list.

Norton 360

  1. Open Norton 360.

    In the My Norton window, click the drop-down arrow next to Secure VPN, and click Settings.

  2. In the Settings window, next to Split Tunnel, click the > icon.

  3. In the Split Tunnel window, move the slider to enable the feature.

    In the App Excluded section, click Add and select the application that you want to exclude from the Secure VPN traffic.

  4. In the alert message that you receive, click OK.

    The newly selected apps will be excluded from your VPN traffic when you turn on VPN next time.

Android

To know the version number of your Norton product, open the Norton app and tap the Menu icon > Settings > About.

Depending on your product, choose one of the following:

Norton VPN

  1. Launch Norton VPN.

  2. Tap the Settings icon on the top-right corner of the screen and tap VPN Preferences.

  3. In the VPN Preferences screen, tap Split Tunneling.

  4. In the Split Tunneling screen, move the slider to enable the feature.

  5. To exclude an app under Split Tunneling, under Exclude specific apps from using VPN, tap the checkbox next to the app that you want to exclude.

    Turn off and turn on VPN to apply the changes made for Split Tunneling.

Norton 360

  1. Launch Norton 360.

  2. At the bottom of the main screen, tap Menu and then tap VPN.

  3. In the VPN screen, tap the Settings icon on the top-right corner of the screen.

  4. In the VPN screen, tap Split Tunneling.

  5. In the Split Tunneling screen, move the slider to enable it.

  6. To exclude an app under Split Tunneling, under Exclude specific apps from using VPN, tap the checkbox next to the app that you want to exclude.

  7. Turn off and turn on Norton VPN to apply the changes made for Split Tunneling.

If the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall Norton VPN. To uninstall and reinstall Norton VPN, refer to Learn how to uninstall Norton VPN.
