Configure Norton device security settings

The Settings window lets you configure all the settings available within your Norton product.

The default product settings provide the right security to help protect your computer. You need not change the settings unless there is a specific need.

Keep in mind that the changes that you make apply to all users who use the computer.

Customize your Norton device security product settings

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

  2. On the left pane, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, customize the product settings as required.

Features

The Features tab lets you access the various product features. Move your mouse pointer over any feature and click Open to open the settings window related to that feature.

Not all features are available in all Norton plans.

General

You can configure the following settings:

  • Language

    Lets you instantly change the language of your Norton product interface. You can add multiple languages and choose a language from the list.

    To add a language to the list, click Add or remove languages > select a language > click Add.

  • Notification settings

    Set how you want to receive product alerts and notifications. Notification settings help prevent Norton product alerts, notifications, or background activities from interrupting you.

    Mute all app notifications temporarily: Select the duration to stop receiving Norton product alerts and notifications. You cannot permanently turn off product notifications. Muting notifications may result in critical alerts related to your device security too getting suppressed.

    Mute special offers only: You can mute the special offers notifications if you do not want to receive notifications around upgrade and Norton products offers.

  • Product Tamper Protection

    Norton Product Tamper Protection prevents outside programs from changing the Norton product. This feature protects your Norton product from an attack or modification by any virus or other unknown threat. You can protect your product from accidental modification or deletion by using the Product Tamper Protection option.

    Keep the Block vulnerable kernel drivers option turned on to ensure your Norton product blocks vulnerable drivers from loading into the Windows kernel memory.

  • Protect Norton settings with a password

    When this option is turned on, your Norton product monitors if any program tries to change your device security settings. You can use the Create Password option and set a password to ensure that only users who use the password can change device security settings.

  • Idle time out

    You can specify the Idle Time Out duration after which you want your Norton product to identify your computer as idle. For example, you specify the Idle Time Out duration as 10 minutes and do not use your computer for 10 minutes. In this case, your Norton product identifies your computer as idle after 10 minutes. You can specify Idle Time Out for 5 minutes to 30 minutes. The default duration is 5 minutes.

  • Remote Management

    The Remote Management feature sends the health status of your device and other information to your Norton account. It allows your Norton product to send product-related details to your Norton account. The details that Remote Management publishes help you view and fix some device security issues from your Norton account.

App Permissions

Lets you view and manage the permissions set for programs for Ransomware Protection and SafeCam features.

You can use the Add App Rule option to add a program and set the permissions level. For each feature, you can choose to block or allow the program from accessing it.

For each listed program, you can view the program name, location, and permission status (allowed or blocked). Click the icon next to a program to view the feature-wise permissions for the selected program.

Not all features are available in all Norton plans.

Troubleshooting

This section helps resolve any product-related issue that you need help with.

  • Reset all settings

    Helps your Norton product to return to the default recommended settings. All changes that you made to various settings are removed.

    Resetting some options may require you to restart your computer. If prompted, restart your computer.

  • Still having problems?

    If you think certain features are not working properly in your Norton product, we recommend you use the Repair Norton option to detect and repair common problems.

    Some repair tasks may require you to restart your computer. If prompted, restart your computer.

  • Log a performance problem

    If you think Norton is slowing down your computer performance, use the Create a Log option to capture and submit a performance log. We analyze the captured performance data to identify performance issues and verify if Norton is causing them.

  • Enable debug logs

    When this option is turned on, your Norton product captures technical data related to your Norton product. We analyze the captured data to identify product issues and verify if Norton is causing them.

  • Send debug logs

    Lets you access the Norton Support Tool to send product logs to Norton. To learn how the Norton Support Tool works, see Send Norton product debug logs with Norton Support Tool.

    You can send the logs if you think your Norton product is not working properly or is affecting the performance of your PC.

Privacy

Your Norton product collects certain information from the installed computer. We collect this information to evaluate and improve the ability of our products to detect malicious behavior, fraudulent websites, and other Internet security and privacy risks.

You can choose to turn on data collection for the following:

  • Norton Community Watch

    Norton Community Watch collects information about potential security risks from your computer and sends the information to Norton for analysis. This helps Norton identify new threats and where they originated to help provide solutions to block them.

    We recommend that you keep this option turned on. While turning off this option could affect submissions from some protection features, critical data will still be sent even if this option is turned off. We maintain a high level of protection for the collected information.

    Norton Community Watch collects and submits detailed data about the Norton-specific errors and components only. In the event of detection of a possible risk, we collect information on running processes, visited URLs, and general system information from your computer.
  • Share app usage data

    Share your app usage data with us. You help contribute to analytical data to examine how users interact with Norton products. These data help us improve the service and develop new products.
