Error: "8504,101" appears on my Norton product

This error can happen due to many reasons including threat infection.

We have seen this error appearing with a program called RapidBoot which comes with the Lenovo computers. If you have RapidBoot on your computer, make sure that you download and install the latest version. Contact your computer manufacturer for further assistance.


Download and run Norton Power Eraser

  1. Download Norton Power Eraser.

  2. Click Save.

  3. Select the location as Desktop, and then click Save.

  4. To run Norton Power Eraser, double-click the NPE.exe file.

    If the User Account Control window appears, click Yes or Continue.

  5. Read the license agreement, and click Accept.

  6. In the Norton Power Eraser window, click the Scan for Risks icon.

  7. By default, Norton Power Eraser performs a Rootkit scan and requires a system restart. When you see a prompt to restart the computer, click Restart. If you do not want to include the Rootkit scan, go to Settings, and uncheck the option Include Rootkit scan (requires a computer restart).

  8. After the computer is restarted, the scan starts automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions.

    After you restart the computer, follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall your Norton product.

    If the Scan does not detect any threats, then go to Step 2.


Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

    The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton products from your computer. If you use ACT! or WinFax, back up those databases before you uninstall. For all discontinued products like Norton Ghost or WinFax, make sure that you have the installation files to reinstall the product.

  1. Download the Norton Removal Tool.

    Save the file to the Windows desktop.

  2. On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  4. Restart your computer.

    After the computer restarts, follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall your Norton product. If the error still appears, go to Step 3.


Download Norton Bootable Recovery Tool

  1. Go to the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool page.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to download the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool.

    When the download finishes, the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool Wizard starts automatically.

  3. In the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool Wizard, click Agree & Install to accept the User license agreement.

    If you want to change the default install location, click Install Options, and then click Browse to locate the new install location. Click OK to go back to the main window.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to create the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool on a DVD media or USB key. You can also create an ISO image of the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool to burn it later or use it on a Virtual Machine.
