Customizing Norton Utilities Ultimate settings

The Settings window in Norton Utilities Ultimate lets you configure the various options available within Norton Utilities Ultimate.

The default product settings provide the right optimization for your computer. You need not change the settings unless there is a specific need.

Keep in mind that the changes that you make apply to all users who use the computer.

Windows

  1. Open Norton Utilities Ultimate.

  2. On the main menu, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, customize the product settings as required.

General

You can configure the following settings:

  • Language

    Change the language of the Norton Utilities Ultimate interface.

    Not all product interface content changes to the language you choose. Some text may continue to remain in English.
  • Undo Center

    Choose the categories you want to be part of Undo Center backups. You can change the interval to delete backups. For more information on Undo center, see Undo the recent changes made by Norton Utilities Ultimate.

  • Norton Support Tool

    Access the Norton Support Tool to send product logs to Norton. To learn how the Norton Support Tool works, see Send Norton Utilities Ultimate debug logs with Norton Support Tool.

  • Developer Settings

    Access settings related to the functioning of Norton Utilities Ultimate when not in use.

    Your options are:

    • Keep all features working when I close Norton Utilities Ultimate

    • Allow Norton Utilities Ultimate graphics outside the app

    These settings affect the functionality of your Norton product. We recommend that you keep these options turned on at all times.

Overview

Use the settings in this section to customize your dashboard. You can select the features you want Norton Utilities Ultimate to display in the dashboard.

Auto-Clean

Configure the Automatic Cleaning settings.

Automatic Cleaning runs silently in the background with no actions required from you and frees up space on your PC by removing unwanted items, such as broken shortcuts and registry items, system junk, and browser data.

You can select a cleaning interval (daily, weekly, every 2 weeks or monthly), day, time, and choose the categories of data to clean.

Manage Programs

Your Norton product helps you uninstall the programs that you added to the Uninstall Simulator after a specific period automatically. Choose an interval after which your Norton Utilities Ultimate should uninstall the isolated programs.

Your options are:

  • Never

  • After 2 weeks

  • After 1 month

  • After 3 months

  • After 6 months

  • After 1 year

Browser Cleaner

Configure the Browser data settings.

Under Cleaning delay, choose how long you want to keep the browser cookies and browsing history. Your options are:

  • Always clean

  • Keep for 7 days

  • Keep for 14 days

  • Keep for 30 days

Norton Utilities Ultimate removes all browser data prior to the selected period. You can never get back cleaned up browser data.

Under Cookies Allowlist, add the websites you want to exclude from Browser Cleaner. For each website, type the URL of the website and click Add.

Data Shredder

In the Data Shredder settings window, configure the following settings:

  • Add Data Shredder to the Windows context menu: Enables the Add to Norton Data Shredder option in the Windows right-click context menu. You can right-click on a folder or file and select Add to Norton Data Shredder from the context menu to add the item for shredding directly.

  • Set a shredding priority: Select a priority setting from the drop-down list. Your options are:

    • Low priority: Select this setting to run shredding with low priority to allow you to perform other tasks.

    • High priority: Select this setting to prioritize shredding over other running processes.

  • Select a shredding algorithm: Select an algorithm from the drop-down list. Your options are:

    • Random algorithm: This single-pass overwrite algorithm efficiently shreds data, taking minimum time.

    • Gutmann algorithm: This overwrite algorithm has 35 passes to delete data from magnetic media securely. Created by Peter Gutmann, this algorithm offers high-level security but takes more time to complete.

    • DoD 5250.22-M algorithm: This overwrite algorithm has 3 passes. It provides high-level security but takes time to complete. U.S. military and government agencies trust this algorithm to shred highly sensitive documents securely.

Privacy

Configure the privacy settings. Your options are:

  • Share app-usage data with Norton to help us with new product development: Check this option to share unidentifiable statistical data with Norton. This helps us in developing new products.

  • Share app-usage data with 3rd-party analytics tools to improve this app: Check this option to contribute to anonymized analytical data used to examine how users interact with Norton Utilities Ultimate.

You can use the Product Policy and Privacy Policy links to learn about the categories of data we collect and the data collection process.

Theme

Change the skin color of Norton Utilities Ultimate. You can choose between Dark, Light, and Auto.

The Auto setting changes the color based on your Windows theme color. For example, if your Windows theme color is dark, then Norton Utilities Ultimate theme color changes to dark.

My Subscription

Lets you view your subscription status and subscription expiration date. If the remaining days left in your subscription is less than 30 days, you are provided with a Renew option to renew your subscription.

Updates

Lets you configure the program updates setting.

By default, Norton Utilities Ultimate downloads and installs the latest program updates regularly from Norton servers to help keep your computer running optimally. However, you can choose how you want to get the program updates.

Your options are:

  • Update automatically in the background (Recommended)

  • Check for updates when I open Norton Utilities Ultimate and update when closed

  • I'll update manually

    If you choose this option, you must use the Update Now option to install the latest updates manually.

Mac

  1. Open Norton Utilities Ultimate.

  2. On the main menu, click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, customize the product settings as required using the following tabs:

    General

    You can configure the following settings:

    • Click Update now to update Norton Utilities Ultimate to the latest version.

    • Enable or disable showing the Norton Utilities icon in the menu bar.

    • Enable or disable opening Norton Utilities Ultimate when you start your computer.

    Privacy

    You can configure the privacy policy options.

    You can use the Gen Privacy Notice and Products Privacy Notice links to learn about the categories of data we collect and the data collection process.

    Notifications

    To specify when you want to receive non-critical notifications from Norton Utilities Ultimate.

    File Cleanup

    You can configure the following settings:

    • Notify me when my clutter is more than: You can use the drop-down menu to customize the minimum amount of clutter that will trigger a notification.

    • Custom scanning settings: Enable or disable the areas on which you want Norton Utilities Ultimate to scan for junk files. You can use the drop-down menu to look for larger files.

    • Trash Cleaning

    Browser Cleaner

    You can configure the following settings:

    • Automatically scan your browsers: Click Change under this section, and you can select the frequency, day, and time from the drop-down list.

    • Website history: Use the drop-down list under this section to specify the frequency to clean the browser history.

    • Cookie Allowlist: Under this section, you can add the websites you want to exclude from Browser Cleaner. For each website, type the URL of the website and click Add. You can also choose popular websites from the drop-down list. If you want to add websites from the bookmarks, then click Import bookmarks and select the browsers from the list.

    Duplicate Finder

    You can configure the following settings:

    • Enable or disable the Ignore hidden files option if you want to ignore the hidden files from the duplicate finder scan.

    • Enable or disable the Move duplicates to Trash option if you want to move the duplicate files to the Trash folder.

    • You can use the Look for duplicates larger than: drop-down list to choose the file size of the duplicate files that you want to include as part of the Duplicate Finder scan.

    Photo Cleaner

    You can enable or disable the Move deleted photos to trash option to move bad or similar photos to the Trash folder.

    Uninstaller

    You can configure the following settings:

    • You can use the drop-down list under the Show apps as unused after option to list the apps that are unused for the specified duration.

    • You can use the drop-down list under the Show apps as big that are larger than option to list the apps that are larger than the specified file size.

    • Enable or disable the Notify me when I can delete leftover app files from my Trash (like logs, caches, and others) option to notify you about deleting the leftover app files for the unused apps.
