Norton and Cryptolocker threats

Applicable for: Windows

This article provides more information about the Cryptolocker threat.

What is Cryptolocker?

Cryptolocker is a type of malware that encrypts a user's files. This threat causes even more damage to businesses by not only encrypting the user's files, but also the files on shared or attached network drives.

There are many variants of Cryptolocker like:

  • Trojan.Ransomcrypt.I (Cryptowall and bitcrypt2)

  • Trojan.Cryptodefense

  • Trojan.Cryptolocker.E/ Trojan.Cryptolocker.G (CTB-Locker: Curve-Tor-Bitcoin Locker) also known as Critroni

Can Norton decrypt my files?

The files encrypted by Cryptolocker will remain encrypted. Norton products do not decrypt files that have been affected by these threats. However, you can replace the files from a previous backup if you are using a backup solution.

Best Practices

Some of the preventive measures and best practices to avoid further infection and possible data loss are:

  • Configure backup in Norton

  • Do not follow unsolicited web links in email messages or submit any information to webpages in links.

  • Use caution when opening email attachments.

  • Keep operating systems and software, including anti-virus, up-to-date with the latest patches.

  • Perform regular backups of all systems/data to avoid serious consequences should your system fall under attack
