Error: "This process is unable to continue due to a system service that may not be installed or cannot be started..."

Applicable for: Windows

This error message appears when Norton installation is attempted on a Windows 11/10 computer with ARM-based processor. To resolve this issue, get the Norton Security app from Microsoft Store.

STEP 1

Find the processor type

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

     

    control
  3. Click System.

  4. In the View basic information about your computer page, check the details next to System type.

    If the processor is ARM-based, then you need to get the Norton Security app from Microsoft Store. If the processor is not ARM-based, then go to Step 3.

STEP 2

Get the Norton Security app from Microsoft Store

  1. On your Windows 11/10 device, launch the Microsoft Store app.

  2. Search for Norton Security.

  3. In the Microsoft Store page for Norton Security, click Get and install the app.

    Follow the on-screen instructions. For more information, read Install Norton Security on Windows in S mode.

STEP 3

Enable Remote Desktop Services

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and press Enter.

     

    services.msc

    If the User Account Control window is prompted, click Continue.

  3. In the Services dialog box, locate and double-click Remote Desktop Services.

  4. To the right of Startup type, verify whether Automatic appears. If Startup type is not Automatic, then in the drop-down list, click Automatic.

  5. To the right of Service Status, verify whether Started appears. If the Service status is not Started, then click Start.

  6. Click OK.

STEP 4

Enable the Remote Procedure Call service

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

     

    services.msc

    If the User Account Control window is prompted, click Continue in the User Account Control window.

  3. In the Services box, locate and double-click the Remote Procedure Call service.

  4. To the right of Startup type, verify whether Automatic appears. If Startup type is not Automatic, then in the drop-down list, click Automatic.

  5. To the right of Service Status, verify whether Started appears. If the Service status is not Started, then click Start.

  6. Click OK.

  7. Exit the Services window.

  8. Exit all programs, and restart the computer.
