Learn more about managing Protected Ports

The Protected Ports window lists all the email ports that Norton protects.

Norton automatically protects the default POP3 and SMTP ports to protect your email program from viruses and other security threats.

Norton supports all email accounts that use non-SSL POP3 and SMTP communication protocols and does not support SSL-encrypted email ports. Norton also scans all incoming and all outgoing email messages.

If your email program does not use the default port numbers, you must manually add the port numbers to the Protected Ports window to protect your email program from viruses and threats. Your Internet service provider (ISP) provides you the port numbers for your email program.

You can view the following details in the Protected Ports window:

Protocol

Displays the email communication protocol.

  • POP3

Indicates that the email port is the incoming POP3 protocol.

  • SMTP

Indicates that the email port is the outgoing SMTP protocol.

Port

Displays the email port number.

You can use the following options in the Protected Ports window to add or remove ports:

Add

The port number must be between 1 and 65535. You cannot add a port that Norton already protects.

Remove

You cannot remove the default SMTP port 25 and POP3 port 110. Norton automatically protects these default ports.

You can add only the port numbers that are not assigned to any other protocols by Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). The standard ports that are assigned to other protocols by IANA are blocked. For more information, see IANA website.
