Learn more about Cloud Backup

Applicable for: Windows

One of the most important ways to protect the valuable information on your PC is to back up your files regularly. In case you lose your data, Norton helps you restore them.

Cloud Backup stores and protect important files and documents as a preventative measure to data loss due to hard drive failures, stolen devices and even ransomware. You can restore your valuable information from the backups that your Norton product has made. You can also use backup to keep your PC's permanent disk from becoming filled with old and seldom-used files. After you have backed up such files, you can remove them from your PC and restore them later if you need to use them again.

By default, your Norton product backs up files to the cloud. If the cloud storage space is insufficient, the files are backed up locally to any media that Norton recognizes as a storage drive. The backup destination may include your external drive, network storage folders, or flash drive connected to your computer.

You might want to configure or change your backup settings for a variety of reasons. You may have acquired a new disk drive that you want to use for backups. You may decide that a different schedule is more convenient than the one you chose. You may decide to add specific files or folders to your backup.

Norton Cloud Backup is available only on Windows.

When Norton Backup is in progress

Do not turn off your computer when Norton backup is in progress. The first time you run a backup, Norton may take several minutes to examine, and copy all of the files on your computer. If your Internet connection is slow, the process can take longer.

If the backup is interrupted, then the next time it starts, it resumes from where it left off and continues until it finishes. Once the backup completes, you can use the View Details option to see the details of files that were backed up.

Tips

  • Many home and small business Internet connections are asymmetrical, meaning that their upload speeds are slower than their download speeds. A single large file, such as a high-quality photograph, may take several minutes or longer to upload to your Secure Cloud Storage. If you have an asymmetrical or slow Internet connection, consider backing up your smaller files, such as your financial documents and word-processing documents first. You can add the larger files to another backup set and schedule it to run when your computer is idle.

  • The amount of space in your Secure Cloud Storage is much smaller than the typical permanent disk that most recent computers have. Cloud Backup provides sufficient storage to handle many of your backup needs. If you run out of storage space, your backup could fail due to insufficient storage.

  • Periodically, look over the files that you have in your Secure Cloud Storage. Delete the files that you no longer need to make additional storage space available. For more information, see Delete backup set and files from Cloud Backup.
