FAQ: Norton and macOS Big Sur (11.x)

As of November 12th, 2020, the new macOS Big Sur (11.x) is now available. All the Mac users with compatible hardware can upgrade the macOS to Big Sur (11.x) for free.

Before you upgrade to macOS Big Sur, run LiveUpdate and install all the available updates for your Norton product.

The following FAQ answers your queries related to your Norton products on macOS Big Sur.

Is my Norton product for Mac compatible with the new macOS Big Sur?

Your Norton product works on macOS Big Sur as long as you have the latest version installed. Run LiveUpdate and install all the available updates for your Norton product before you upgrade to macOS Big Sur.

Following Norton products are compatible with macOS Big Sur:

  • Norton 360 (8.6.0 or later)

  • Norton Security (8.6.0 or later)

  • Norton AntiVirus (8.6.0 or later)

  • Norton Internet Security (8.6.0 or later)

Some of the existing Norton device security products are not compatible with macOS on ARM-based devices.

How do I update my Norton product for Mac to the latest version?

To update Norton to the latest version, do the following:

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

    If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. In the Norton product main window, click LiveUpdate.

    Wait for the LiveUpdate to download install all the available updates.

  3. When all the updates are complete, you are prompted to restart. Click Restart.

  4. After you restart your Mac, in the Norton alert window, click Finish Setup.

  5. In the Norton Update window, click OK.

  6. In the Norton installation window, click Continue to allow Network Monitoring, and then click Allow.

  7. To allow Full Disk Access, click Open Preferences to open the Security & Privacy settings.

  8. In the Security & Privacy window, ensure that Norton System Extension is enabled. Navigate back to the Norton installation window and click Complete.

Can I install and run my Norton product on Apple Silicon M1(ARM) computers?

Our latest Norton device security products are compatible with macOS on Apple Silicon M1 (ARM) devices using the Rosetta 2 translation feature.

I upgraded to macOS Big Sur and see a message about my Norton product being an incompatible software

If you see an incompatible software message after you upgrade to macOS Big Sur, uninstall and reinstall Norton. For more information, read: Message: "Incompatible Software: This version of Norton product is not compatible with this version of macOS"

I cannot find the Norton extension in my web browser after I upgraded to macOS Big Sur

If you cannot find the Norton extension in your web browser, you can Recover the missing Norton extensions for your browser on Mac.
