Getting Started with a ChexSystems Security Freeze (For Banks)

What is a ChexSystems Security Freeze?

According to their website, Chex Systems, Inc. (ChexSystems) is a nationwide specialty consumer reporting agency under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). ChexSystems' clients regularly contribute information on closed checking and savings accounts. ChexSystems provides services to financial institutions and other types of companies that have a permissible purpose under the FCRA. ChexSystems' services primarily assist its clients in assessing the risk of opening new accounts.

Identity thieves can use your information to open bank accounts and misuse them the by over drafting and accruing fees or conducting illegal activities. This could result in financial institutions flagging your identity, preventing you from opening legitimate new accounts, and exposing you to legal liability for any illegal actions.

If you choose to place a security freeze on your file, you will receive a unique personal identification number (PIN) by mail. The PIN will be required to perform specific actions with regard to your security freeze, such as applying a temporary lift, removing or changing personal identifying information (for example, address, Social Security number, etc.).
