Today, many users are vulnerable to scams on social messaging apps that leverage AI. These include risky text messages or chats with malicious links, AI-powered scams, and impersonation scams. These scams aim to trick users into giving up money or personal data.
Helps protect you from scams on social messaging applications before you get scammed.
Currently, it monitors and scans all the incoming messages you receive on WhatsApp only and notifies you of potential scams.
Norton’s built-in AI looks for signs of fraud and alerts you to malicious links in WhatsApp messages.
Availability: Safe Social on mobile is currently available as a limited Early Access feature for select users in the United States.
Platform: Safe Social on mobile is supported only on Android devices running version 10 or later. It is not currently available on iOS.
Scope: Currently, Safe Social on mobile works only with WhatsApp.
Language support: Safe Social on mobile is designed to work across languages, but currently performs best in English. Scam detection efficacy in other languages may be lower.
Privacy and storage: By default, Safe Social on mobile temporarily stores messages from unknown senders (up to 30 days) and always stores flagged suspicious messages (up to 5 years). You can change this with the setting in the Norton 360 app to store all messages, only suspicious ones, or maintain the default. Attachments and media are never stored. Open Norton 360.
On the Norton 360 app main screen, tap Genie Scam Protection.
Tap Safe Social > Start setup.
Select the country code and enter your phone number to allow your Norton 360 app to generate a one-time code. Copy this code.
Tap Next > Open WhatsApp.
Depending on what you see in WhatsApp, do one of the following:
If you receive a notification from WhatsApp: Tap the notification, confirm you want to connect to Norton, and enter the code from step 4. The notification may display as Chrome (Linux) is attempting to link to your WhatsApp Account. This is part of the normal linking process with Norton.
If you do not receive a notification: Open WhatsApp, tap the three-dot menu > Linked devices > Link a device. Tap Link with phone number instead (at the bottom) and enter the code from step 4.
Once complete, you will see Norton 360 listed under Linked Devices in WhatsApp.
Return to the Norton 360 app and go to Genie Scam Protection > Safe Social.
Safe Social is now set up on WhatsApp to detect scams. If a suspicious message is found, you will receive a notification from your Norton 360 app.
