Back up the Windows registry

The Windows registry is not a Norton program. It is part of Microsoft Windows. The registry information on this page is for your convenience and does not take the place of information from Microsoft.

Back up the Windows registry

1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

   regedit

   If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.

3. On the File menu, click Export.

4. In the File name box, type a name that you will remember, such as Registry Backup.

5. Select a location where you want to save the Registration Entries (.reg) file.

6. Click Save.

Restore the Windows registry

1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

   regedit

   If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.

3. On the File menu, click Import.

4. Select the registry backup file that you want to restore, and then click Open.
