Norton Power Eraser Tutorials for Windows XP/Vista

1. When Norton Power Eraser completes the scan, it displays the scan results. The items that Norton Power Eraser considers as risks, display the status as Bad and recommended action as Remove or Repair. The items that require further review display the status as Unknown.

2. Depending on your situation, do one of the following:

   • If you see No Risks Found, Norton Power Eraser did not detect any risks on your computer, click OK to exit.

   • If you see any files that are listed as Bad, the Remove check box under Action is checked automatically. It is recommended to remove these files. If the Repair check box under Action is checked, then these files will be repaired after the restart.

   • If you see any files that are listed as Unknown, for each of these files, click the cloud icon next to it. It sends the file to a Norton server and scans it using the traditional signature-based detection engines.

     • If the Cloud Scan result shows Bad for any file, click the Remove check box.

     • If the Cloud Scan result shows Unknown, do not click the Remove check box. The file may not be a threat, and needs further analysis.

3. Make sure that Create System Restore Point before proceeding with fix (Recommended) check box is selected.

4. Click Fix Now.

5. If you are asked to restart the computer to complete the removal, click Restart Now.

6. After successful removal of the risk, click Done.

Norton Power Eraser gives you the option to set up a network proxy, adjust log settings, multi-boot check, and include the Rootkit scan.

1. Start Norton Power Eraser.

2. Read the license agreement, and then click Accept.

3. In the top-right corner, click Settings.

   The options for Network Proxy settings, Log settings, Multi-Boot check, and Rootkit scan are displayed.

4. If your network uses proxy settings to connect to the Internet, click Configure to configure network proxy settings.

5. Do one of the following:

   • If you are not sure of the proxy settings, select Automatically detect settings.

   • If you have an automatic configuration script, select Use automatic configuration script, and then type the script in the URL textbox.

   • If you know the proxy server settings, select Use a proxy server for your HTTP connections, and then type the server address and the port number.

   • If your proxy server requires authentication, select Connecting to my firewall or proxy server requires authorization. Type your user name and password.

6. When you finish updating Network Proxy settings, click Apply, and then click OK.

7. If you have more than one operating system installed on your computer, Norton Power Eraser lets you scan system files and registry files of other operating systems as well. To include other operating systems in scan, select Enable Multi-Boot check.

   If you do not have multiple operating systems installed on your computer, Multi-Boot check option is grayed out.

8. To configure Log settings, do one of the following:

   • If you want to change the location of the log file, browse and select the new location.

   • If you want to delete the log history, click Delete Log History.

   • If you want to restore the default settings, click Use Default Settings.

     Once you delete the log history, you cannot undo any previous Norton Power Eraser fix sessions.

9. By default, Norton Power Eraser includes Rootkit scan. If you do not want to include it, uncheck Include Rootkit Scan (requires a computer restart).

   Rootkit scan is performed only on the current operating system and requires a system restart. Rootkit scan does not scan the other inactive operating system even if you enable the Multi-boot check option.

10. Click Apply, and then click OK.

During every system scan, Norton Power Eraser creates a log of important system information such as:

• Operating systems present on the computer

• Installed drivers

• Processes and the services running on the computer

• Startup items

• Browser plug-ins

• Files that are detected as risks and the actions taken

The log is in XML format. For best results, use an XML viewer.

1. Start Norton Power Eraser.

2. Read the license agreement, and then click Accept.

3. Click the Undo Previous Fix icon.

4. Under Previous Repair Sessions, select a repair session, and then click View.

5. The log file opens in your default web browser.

If you think that Norton Power Eraser has incorrectly removed a file or a registry file on your computer, you can undo the repair session to restore the files or the registry keys.

1. Start Norton Power Eraser.

2. Read the license agreement, and then click Accept.

3. Click the Undo Previous Fix icon.

4. In the Previous Repair Sessions window, select a repair session that you want to undo, and click Next.

5. In the Previous Repair Session window, select the files that you want to restore, and click Undo.

6. Click Restart Now to complete the restore.

7. After you restart the computer, Norton Power Eraser displays the files that were restored. Click Done.

In some cases, the files that are infected on your computer can be the Windows files required to boot your computer. Norton Power Eraser can still detect and repair an infected Windows file. However, modifying or repairing a Windows file may make your computer unbootable.

If you cannot boot your computer after removing a threat from your computer using Norton Power Eraser, you may need to undo the repair session. Norton Power Eraser comes with a Cross OS Undo feature with which you can undo a repair session by booting into the computer using a different operating system.

If your computer is installed with multiple operating systems, which are configured for a multi-boot, you can log on to your computer using the other working operating system. After that, start Norton Power Eraser from there to use the Cross OS Undo feature.

1. Start your computer using a different operating system.

2. Browse to the location where the Norton Power Eraser tool is saved and double-click the NPE.exe file to start it.

3. Read the license agreement and click Accept.

4. In the top-right corner, click Settings.

5. Select Enable Multi-Boot check, and then click OK.

6. Click Undo Previous Fix.

   Norton Power Eraser checks and displays all the repair sessions for the current operating system and other non-host operating systems on the computer.

7. Select the operating system and user combination from the list.

8. Select the repair session that you want to undo and click Next.

   The repair session entry for a non-host operating system that fails to boot, displays the operating system as Target OS next to it.

9. Review the fixes that are performed in the selected repair session. Select the files that you want to restore, and then click Undo.

10. If Norton Power Eraser prompts you to restart the computer, then click Restart Now.

11. Norton Power Eraser displays the files that were restored. Click Done.
