Error: "Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect could not load the scan engine. Please run LiveUpdate..." on Mac

To fix this problem, uninstall your Norton product using the RemoveSymantecMacFiles tool and then reinstall it.

RemoveSymantecMacFiles removes all folders that are created by Norton installers and any files within those folders. You will lose all files that reside in those folders, including any you have created.

Run RemoveSymantecMacFiles

  1. Download the RemoveSymantecMacFiles.zip file.

  2. Double-click the RemoveSymantecMacFiles.zip file that you downloaded.

    The file is expanded.

  3. Open the RemoveSymantecMacFiles folder.

  4. Double-click the RemoveSymantecMacFiles.command file.

  5. Type your administrator password, and then press return.

    When you type your password, no characters appear.

  6. To remove all Symantec files and folders, type 1.

  7. Press return.

    RemoveSymantecMacFiles removes all of the Symantec files

  8. On the Terminal menu, click Quit Terminal.

Install Norton

  1. Sign In to Norton.

  2. If you are not signed in to Norton already, you are prompted to sign in. Type in your email address and password for Norton, and click Sign In.

    If you do not have a Norton account, click Create account and complete the sign-up process.

  3. In the Get Started page, click Download Norton.

  4. Read the Norton License Agreement, and click Agree & Download.

  5. Click OK to save and open the Setup.zip file.

  6. When the download finishes, double-click the Norton product Installer.

  7. Click Agree & Install to start the installation.

  8. If you see a prompt to join Norton Community Watch, click Join Now.

    If you do not want to join Norton Community Watch, click Maybe Later. To know more, click Learn More in the prompt window.

  9. When you see a prompt, type your administrator account password, and then click Install Helper.

    During installation on macOS 10.13.x or later, you may see a message saying that "System software was blocked from loading..." depending on your security settings. Click Allow to continue. If you have multiple software installed on your Mac that requires authentication, then select Symantec, and click OK.

  10. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

  11. In the Installation Successful window, click Restart.

    You must restart your computer to complete the installation process.
