To fix this problem, activate the product again. If the problem persists, run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool.

STEP 1

Activate your Norton product again

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

    If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. In the Norton product window, click Activate Now.

  3. When you are prompted to sign in to your Norton account, enter your email address and password, and then click Sign In.

    If you do not remember your password, at the bottom of the window, click Forgot password? and then follow the instructions to reset the password.

  4. Once you sign in to your account, your subscription is updated automatically.

    Activating your product again does not charge you or use any additional licenses.

    If the problem persists, go to Step 2.

STEP 2

Download and run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool

If you have Norton Family installed, uninstall it before you run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool.

  1. Download the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool.

    Save the file to the Windows desktop. On some browsers, the file is automatically saved to its default location.

  2. To open the Downloads window in your browser, press the Ctrl + J key.

  3. Double-click the NRnR icon.

  4. Read the license agreement, and click Agree.

  5. Click Remove & Reinstall.

    You may see the Remove button if Norton is from your service provider.

  6. Click Continue or Remove.

  7. Click Restart Now.

    After the computer restarts, follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall your Norton product.

If you see this error message with the Norton product for Mac that is provided by your service provider, remove your Norton product using the RemoveNortonMac utility. After removing the product, download and reinstall your Norton product.

STEP 1

Download and run RemoveNortonMacFiles as an administrator

  1. Download the RemoveNortonMacFiles.zip file.

  2. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
  3. In the Finder window, click Downloads in the left pane under Favorites.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • If you downloaded the file using Safari browser, open the RemoveNortonMacFiles folder.

    • If you downloaded the file using the Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome browsers, double-click the RemoveNortonMacFiles.zip file to expand it, and then open the RemoveNortonMacFiles folder.

  5. In the RemoveNortonMacFiles folder, control-click the RemoveNortonMacFiles.command file, and then click Open with > Terminal (default).

    To run this tool, you must be logged on with an Administrator account and a non-blank password.

  6. Do one of the following:

    • If you have not uninstalled Norton application on your macOS 10.15.x or later, a message appears in the Terminal window that prompts to drag and drop the Norton product from Applications folder to Trash. Go to step 7.

    • If you have macOS 10.14.x and earlier, OR if you already uninstalled your Norton product on your macOS 10.15.x or later, go to step 13.

  7. In the Terminal window, press return to open the Applications folder in Finder.

  8. In the Applications folder, select the Norton application, and then drag and drop it to the Trash.

  9. When you see a prompt, type your administrator account password, and then click OK.

  10. In the Norton installer window, click Uninstall.

  11. If you see a prompt, type your administrator account password, and then click Install Helper.

  12. When the Norton product uninstall finishes, run the RemoveNortonMacFiles.command file in Terminal again.

    For more information, refer to the instructions in step 5 above.

  13. In the Terminal window, type your administrator password, and then press return.

    When you type your password, no characters appear.

  14. To remove all Norton files and folders, type 1.

    If you want to quit RemoveNortonMacFiles without removing any files, type 2.

  15. Press return.

    RemoveNortonMacFiles tool removes all of the Norton files.

  16. When the RemoveNortonMacFiles tool finishes removing the Norton files, in the Terminal window, type y, and press return to restart your Mac.

    Before you press return, make sure that you save your work in other open applications.

STEP 2

Download and install your Norton product

  1. Log on to your service provider's website or locate the email that was sent to you when you subscribed to the Norton service.

  2. Click the link to download your Norton product.

    If you cannot find a link to download your Norton product, contact your service provider.

  3. By default, the file is automatically saved to the Downloads folder.

  4. Double-click the file that you downloaded.

  5. Double-click the Norton product Installer to launch the installer.

  6. In the File Security dialog box, click Open.

  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

  8. If you receive a prompt to enter the Activation PIN, type the PIN that you received from your service provider, and then click Activate.

    Usually this PIN is automatically inserted in your Norton product and activation is completed.

  9. Click Continue.

  10. In the Installation Successful window, click Restart.
