How do I maintain good system health using Norton Utilities?

Norton Utilities helps you to maintain good health of your system which enables your system to function optimally. We recommend that you perform the following tasks consistently to maintain good system health.

Clean your Registry

Cleaning your registry and removing invalid entries improves your system's performance and stability.

To clean your registry

  1. In the Norton Utilities main window, select the Performance tab.

  2. In the Performance Home window, under Select your action, click Clean Your Registry.

  3. In the Clean Your Registry window, under Select the Type of Scan to Run, select Complete Registry Scan to search for registry issues in all areas of your system.

  4. Click Start Scan to begin scanning.

    At the end of the scan, the Registry Scan Results window lists the problems in your registry.

  5. In the Registry Scan Results window, select the required registry entries that your wish to repair and click Repair to fix the problem.

Compact Your Registry

Registry compacting removes gaps, wasted space and corrupt keys from the registry, and physically defragments the Windows registry files.

To compact your registry

  1. In the Norton Utilities main window, select the Performance tab.

  2. In the Performance Home window, under Select your action, click Compact Your Registry.

  3. Click Start to begin analyzing your registry. After the analysis is complete, you can view the results of the analysis in the window that appears.

  4. Click Apply.

    Norton Utilities will then request your permission to restart your computer to apply the compacting changes. Click Yes to restart your computer.

Check the Create System Restore Point check box before you compact the registry.

Clear your Windows History (checking Document History)

Cleaning your Windows history clears your My Recent Documents list.

To clean your Windows History

  1. In the Norton Utilities main window, select the Privacy tab.

  2. In the Privacy Home window, under Select your action, click Clean Your Windows History.

  3. In the Privacy Scan and Clean window, in the Item Name column, check Document History.

    This option is not checked by default.

  4. Click Save Choices to confirm your selection.

  5. Click Clean Windows to begin cleaning your Windows History.

Bleaching your disks

The Bleach Disk feature in Norton Utilities ensures that your previously deleted files are unrecoverable from your computer. Please note that bleaching does not destroy or remove existing data; it is only performed on the existing free space available on your hard drive.

To completely eliminate the history trail of your deleted files, there is an option to select Clean Master File Table Record in the bleach feature which scrambles your Master File Tables records during the next system startup.

To bleach your disks

  1. In the Norton Utilities main window, select the Privacy tab.

  2. In the Privacy Home window, under Select your action, click Bleach Disks.

  3. In the Bleach Free Disk Space window, in the Bleach Free Disk Space row, move the On/Off switch to the right to the On position to enable disk bleaching. A list of drives is presented on the screen.

  4. Select the drive(s) on which you want to perform the bleach.

  5. Click Clean Disks to bleach space on the selected drives.
