Norton Power Eraser Tutorials for Windows

Norton Power Eraser is a free tool that can be downloaded and run to remove threats from your computer. You can run this tool to scan for threats even if you have a Norton product, or any other security product. If you cannot start the computer in Normal mode, you can run this tool in Safe mode. Norton Power Eraser is easy to download, and scans your computer quickly to detect the most aggressive computer viruses. You don't need to install this tool.

The Norton Power Eraser tool is only compatible with computers running Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 and later operating systems. It does not work with computers running on Mac OS X, WinPE, Android devices, and iOS devices.

We have decided to retire Norton Power Eraser version 5.3 for Windows XP and Windows Vista. Norton Power Eraser version 5.3 support will end on March 31, 2023.

Norton Power Eraser uses aggressive methods to detect threats, and there is a risk that it can select some legitimate programs for removal. You should carefully review the scan results page before removing files. If you accidentally remove a legitimate program, you can run Norton Power Eraser to review past repair sessions and undo them.

Download Norton Power Eraser and run a full system scan

  1. Depending on your version of Windows, download one of the following:
    • On 64-bit Windows: Norton Power Eraser
    • On 32-bit Windows: Norton Power Eraser

  2. Press Ctrl + J keys, to open the Downloads window in your browser, and double-click the NPE.exe file.

If the User Account Control window prompts, click Yes or Continue.

  3. Read the license agreement, and click Agree.

If you have already accepted the license agreement, you are not prompted again.

Norton Power Eraser checks for and automatically downloads the new version if available.

  4. In the Norton Power Eraser window, select Full System Scan, and click Run Now.

  5. If you want to include the Rootkit scan, click Settings, and under Scan and Log Settings, toggle the option Include Rootkit scan (requires a computer restart).

    • If you see No Risks Found, Norton Power Eraser did not detect any risks on your computer, click Done to exit.

    • If you see any files that are listed as High or Medium, the check box under Fix is checked automatically. It is recommended to remove these files.

    • If you want more information about the threat, then click on the threat name under Primary Target and view the details.

If your system is configured to use System Restore then Norton Power Eraser will automatically take a restore point as part of the remediation.
