Fix issues configuring network printer or other devices after installing your Norton product

This problem can happen if access to your printer is blocked by Norton Firewall. To fix this problem, restart your computer and the printer. If the problem persists, then configure Norton Firewall settings to allow access to the printer.

Depending on your operating system select one of the following:

I have Windows

These steps are for the current version of Norton products. If you have an older version or if you do not know your product version, go to Norton Update Center.

STEP 1

Add your device to the Device Trust

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

    If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. Click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, click Firewall.

  4. In the General Settings tab, under Network Settings, next to Device Trust, click Configure.

  5. Click Add.

  6. In the Add Device window, enter the following information for the device you cannot connect to:

    • Name - enter a name for your network printer or other device for easy identification.

    • IP or Physical Address - enter the IP or MAC (Media Access Control) address for your network printer or other device.

    • Trust Level - Assign Full Trust to the network device that you cannot access from your computer.

  7. Click Add Device.

  8. Click OK and then Close.

    If the issue is not resolved, go to Step 2.

STEP 2

Configure your Network Trust

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

    If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. Click Settings.

  3. In the Settings window, click Firewall.

  4. In the General Settings tab, under Network Settings, next to Network Trust, click Configure.

  5. In the Network Trust window, under Network Connection, select the Network, and from the Trust Level drop-down, select Full Trust.

  6. Click Apply and then OK.

  7. In the Settings window, click Close.

STEP 1

Trust your network in Location Awareness

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

    If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. Click Advanced or Settings.

  3. In the left pane, click Firewall.

  4. Next to Location Awareness, click the status indicator to turn it ON.

  5. Next to Location Awareness, click the settings icon.

    The Location Awareness window displays the current network location to which your Mac is connected.

  6. Under Connection Blocking settings for current location, select Trusted Network.

    If the problem persists, go to Step 2.

STEP 2

Configure Connection Blocking

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

    If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. Click Advanced or Settings.

  3. In the left pane, click Firewall.

  4. Next to Connection Blocking, click the settings icon.

  5. From the Editing settings drop-down menu, select the network location for which you want to configure the access settings.

  6. Select the Incoming tab, and then from the View drop-down menu, select All, in order of precedence.

  7. Depending on how your printer can be accessed from your Mac, click Add other, and then click one of the following:

    • Add application

    • Add service

    • Add IP address to Zone

  8. If 'Add application' is selected, do the following:

    • In the Choose Application window, from the drop-down menu, select Allow as the access setting.

    • From the list of applications, select the printer application, and click Choose.

      If you cannot find the printer application in the list, click Other, and locate the application in the folder.

  9. If 'Add service' is selected, do the following:

    • In the New Service window, from the drop-down menu, select Allow as the access setting.

    • Next to Service name, from the list of services, select the service that your printer uses, and click Choose.

      If you cannot find the service in the drop-down list, type the service name in the text box.

    • If your printer requires access to specific ports, on the Ports tab, click Add and add the port number, select Allow in access settings.

    • On the Logging and Notifications tab, select the settings that you need.

    • Click Save.

  10. If 'Add IP address to Zone' is selected, do the following:

    • In the Edit address window, from the drop-down menu, select A single computer.

    • Type your printer's IP address.

      If the printer is connected to the network and turned on, you may also click Choose and select printer's IP address from the list.

    • Click Logging and notification settings, and select the options that you want.

    • Click Save.

  11. Repeat steps 6 to 10 to add the printer application or service or IP address on Outgoing tab as well.

  12. Click Done.
