I want to remove Trojan.Poweliks from my computer

This document provides more information about removing the Trojan.Poweliks threat from your computer.

You must have administrative rights to run this tool on your computer.

If you have Microsoft Internet Explorer as your default browser, you need to enable the Internet Explorer security settings to download the fix tool. If you use any other browser, skip to Step 2.

STEP 1

Change Internet Explorer security settings

  1. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer.

  2. On the top-right corner, click Tools icon and select Internet options.

  3. In the Internet Options window, on the Security tab, click Custom level.

  4. In the Security Settings window, scroll down to Downloads.

  5. Under File Download, select Enable and click OK.

  6. Restart Internet Explorer.

STEP 2

Download and run the FixPoweliks tool

  1. Close all currently open applications.

  2. If you have Windows XP, turn off System Restore function.

  3. Depending on your Windows operating system, do one of the following:

    Save the file to your Windows desktop.

  4. Double-click the file to run the removal tool.

  5. Read the license agreement window, click I Accept.

  6. Click Start.

  7. After the scan is complete, click OK.

  8. Restart the computer.

Download and run the Norton Power Eraser tool, to remove any unwanted applications that Trojan.Poweliks might have installed on your computer.

STEP 3

Download and run Norton Power Eraser - Unwanted Application scan

  1. Download Norton Power Eraser.

  2. Click Save.

  3. Select the location as Desktop, and then click Save.

  4. To run Norton Power Eraser, double click the NPE.exe file.

    If the User Account Control window prompts, click Yes or Continue.

  5. Read the license agreement, and click Accept.

  6. In the Norton Power Eraser window, click the Unwanted Application Scan icon.

    When Norton Power Eraser completes the scan, the results are displayed in the Unwanted Apps Scan Complete window.

  7. In the Unwanted Apps Scan Complete window, next to the unwanted application or toolbar, click Uninstall.

  8. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  9. When the uninstall completes, restart the computer.

STEP 4

Delete temporary files

  1. Exit all the programs.

  2. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  3. In the Run dialog box, type the following text:

    %temp%

  4. Click OK.

    The current user's Temp folder opens in Windows Explorer.

  5. On the Edit menu, click Select All.

  6. Press Delete.

  7. If you are asked to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
