Security History

Security History lets you view the items that Norton has submitted to Symantec. Symantec assesses the data to uncover any new threats. The collective effort from all Norton security product users helps in the quick identification of solutions for these threats and risks.

Security History provides a centralized location in which you can do the following:

  • View the history of Security History alerts and event messages.

  • View the results of scans that are run on your computer.

  • View the items that you submitted to Symantec Security Response.

  • Manage Quarantine items.

  • Monitor the security tasks that your products perform in the background.

You can view the history of events based on the category that you select and the search string that you provide. Norton restricts the number of search results that appear on each page in the Security History window. Therefore, Security History divides the items that are returned for any search criteria and displays them on separate pages. You can use the pagination scroll at the bottom of the window to navigate to different pages sequentially.

The Details pane in the Security History window displays details such as the category and the safety level of the risk. The Recommended Action section displays the action that Norton recommends you to take on the selected security risk.

Security History provides the following options to let you manage Security History information:

Show

Lets you choose the category for which you want to view the security-event information in Security History

The categories Recent History and Full History let you view the information about the security events for all of the categories.

When you select an option in the drop-down list, Security History displays the security event information for that option in the security events list.

The security events list provides information about the risk severity, activity, status, date, and time on which the event occurred.

More Details

Lets you view more details about the item that you select in the security events list

Restore

Lets you return the selected quarantine item to its original location.

You can also exclude the selected quarantine item from future scans.

This option is available only for categories such as Quarantine.

Options

Lets you view the Threat Detected/File Insight window

In this window, you can view the details and the actions that you can take on the selected Security History event.

This option is available only for categories such as Quarantine.

Export

Lets you export the Security History information

Norton saves the information that you export as an .mcf file or as a text file (comma-separated file format). When you export, the category name in the Show drop-down list appears as the default file name. You can provide a file name of your choice.

The .mcf file format is the Security History Log Files format and is proprietary to Symantec. You can view the history of the security events that you save by importing the .mcf file into Security History.

Import

Lets you import the Security History information that you saved

The security events list replaces the current security events list and displays all of the security events present in the .mcf file. You can also select an option in the Show drop-down list and view the option-specific details that are saved in the .mcf file.

In the import mode, you cannot make modifications to the information. For example, you cannot clear the logs. You can revert to the current security events list by clicking the Close file: file_name.mcf link.

Quick Search

Lets you find Security History items by using a keyword or the name of a security risk

For example, if you want to view all of the alerts that Auto-Protect has generated, you can filter for the term Auto-Protect. If you want to view all of the items that pertain to a particular security risk, you can type the name of the security risk.

For example, you can type Adware.Hotbar as a security risk name in the Quick Search text box. All items that are related to this category are listed in the security events list.

You can also search for all of the security events for a particular date.

Go to page

Lets you navigate to a specific page in Security History.

Security History displays the items on separate pages. You can use the Go to page option to view a specific page. You can enter up to 6 letters on the Go to Page textbox.

Each page contains a maximum of 100 items.

Refresh List

Lets you refresh the Security History window to include the latest information.

More Options

Lets you view the Security History - Advanced Details window or the File Insight window based on the activity you select.

Norton displays the Security History - Advanced Details window if the item that you selected is not a threat. The Security History - Advanced Details window lets you view more information about the items that you selected in the Security History window.

Norton displays the File Insight window if the item that you selected is detected as a threat. The File Insight window lets you view the threat details of the file that you selected.

In addition to these options, you can take other actions that are specific to the category that you select in the Show drop-down list. Some of the actions are Clear List, Clear Entries, Add to Quarantine, and Quick Scan. For example, when you select the Quarantine view, Security History lets you add an item to Quarantine.
