Get the latest definition updates if the virus definitions are not current even after downloading all the updates

These steps are for the current version of Norton product. If you have an older version or if you do not know your product version, go to Norton Update Center.

STEP 1

Check the date and time on your computer

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    timedate.cpl
  3. Check that the day, month, and year are correct.

    If the date is incorrect, change the calendar to the correct day, month, and year.

  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.

  5. Run LiveUpdate again.

    If the problem persists, go to Step 2.

STEP 2

Update your virus definitions using Intelligent Updater

  1. Go to the Intelligent Updater downloads page.

    The Intelligent Updater download page is currently hosted by Symantec Enterprise Security, which is now a division part of Broadcom Inc.

  2. To choose the correct definition set, you need to know the name and version of your Norton product and the version of Windows.

  3. Depending on your version of Windows and Norton product, download the appropriate definition set.

     

    Norton product version

    Windows 64-bit platform

    22.9 and later

    e.g. 20170126-020-core3sdsg2v5i32.exe

    e.g. 20170126-020-core3sdsg2v5i64.exe

    22.7 and 22.8

    e.g. 20170126-020-core3sdsv5i32.exe

    e.g. 20170126-020-core3sdsv5i64.exe

    22.6 and earlier

    e.g. 20170126-020-v5i32.exe

    e.g. 20170126-020-v5i64.exe

  4. Save the file to the Windows desktop.

  5. On the desktop, double-click the file that you downloaded.

  6. In the Intelligent Updater window, click Yes to continue.

  7. When Intelligent Updater finishes updating the definitions, click OK.

STEP 3

Download Norton Power Eraser and run a scan

Norton Power Eraser is compatible with Windows 7 SP1 and newer operating systems.

  1. Depending on your version of Windows, download one of the following: 
    • On 64-bit Windows: Norton Power Eraser.
    • On 32-bit Windows: Norton Power Eraser.

  2. Press Ctrl + J key, to open the Downloads window in your browser, and double-click the NPE.exe file.

    If the User Account Control window prompts, click Yes or Continue.

  3. Read the license agreement and click Agree.

    If you have already accepted the license agreement, you will not be prompted again.

    Norton Power Eraser checks for and automatically downloads the new version if available.

  4. In the Norton Power Eraser window, select Full System Scan, and click Run Now.

  5. If you want to include the Rootkit scan, click Settings, and under Scan and Log Settings, toggle the option Include Rootkit scan (requires a computer restart) and click Apply.

  6. When you see a prompt to restart the computer, click Restart.

    Wait for the scan to complete. Follow the on-screen instructions.
