Error: (8701,2380) "Unable to open ASPI driver gearaspi.dll..." when I create a backup to CD/DVD drive

GEAR Software develops the CD/DVD authoring program that is used when the Norton product backup files directly onto a CD or DVD. Some programs have been found to be incompatible with the GEAR drivers. If you have any of the following programs installed, we recommend that you uninstall it.

  • SPTD drivers from DuplexSecure

  • HP Memories Disc Creator

  • Liquid Audio

  • Portal Player

  • Oak Technology SimpliCD

  • Broderbund's Print Shop version 20

If you do not have any of these programs installed, then this problem can occur if the GEAR drivers are not installed properly. To reinstall the GEAR drivers, go to Step 2.

STEP 1

Uninstall the incompatible program

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    appwiz.cpl

  3. In the list of currently installed programs, select the incompatible program, and then click Uninstall or Remove.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the program.

  5. When the uninstall completes, restart the computer.

    If you have more than one incompatible program, uninstall all of them.

    If the problem persists, go to Step 2.

STEP 2

Download and install the driver for GEAR software

  1. Download the GEAR driver installer.

    Save the file onto the Windows desktop.

  2. On your Windows desktop, double-click the Driver_Installer_x86_x64.exe file.

  3. When the Open File - Security Warning appears, click Run.

    If the User Account Control alert appears, click Allow.

  4. In the GEAR driver installer window, click Next.

  5. Read the License Agreement, click I accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click Next.

  6. Enter the user name and Organization, and then click Next.

  7. Click Install.

  8. When you see the message "The InstallShield Wizard has successfully installed GEAR driver...", click Finish.

  9. Restart the computer.
