Norton from Symantec

Error: "8504,106" appears on my Norton product

These steps are for the current version of the Norton products. If you have an older version or if you do not know your product version, go to Norton Update Center.

STEP 1

Turn off User Account Control

    If you use Windows XP, skip this step, and then continue with Step 2

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    UserAccountControlSettings.exe

  3. In the User Account Control Settings window, move the slider to Never notify, and then click OK.

  4. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

    • For Windows 8/7: In the User Account Control window, click Yes.

    • For Windows Vista: In the User Account Control window, click Continue, and then uncheck Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer.

  5. Exit all the programs, and then restart the computer.

STEP 2

Restart your computer

  1. Exit all the programs.

  2. Restart your computer.

STEP 3

Run LiveUpdate

    If you still cannot start your Norton product, skip these steps and go to the "What if this didn't work?" link at the bottom of this page to uninstall and reinstall your Norton product. If you are using Windows 8/7/Vista, go to Step 4 to turn on User Account Control before you uninstall and reinstall your Norton product.

  1. Start your Norton product.

  2. In the main window, click LiveUpdate or Tasks.

  3. Click Run LiveUpdate.

  4. When Norton LiveUpdate is finished, click OK or Close.

  5. Run LiveUpdate until you see the message, "Your Norton product has the latest protection updates."

  6. Exit all the programs, and restart the computer.

STEP 4

Turn on User Account Control

    If you use Windows XP, then you are done with this document.

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    UserAccountControlSettings.exe

  3. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

    • For Windows 8/7: In the User Account Control Settings window, move the slider to choose when you want to be notified.

      If you have not changed the User Account Control settings before, then move the slider to Default - Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer.

    • For Windows Vista: Check Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer.

  4. Click OK.

  5. Exit all the programs, and then restart the computer.
