I receive alerts on high CPU or high memory usage from my Norton product

Performance Monitoring feature of a Norton product closely monitors your computer and alerts you when there is a more than normal amount of CPU or memory usage occurring. This alert also reports which component or application is using high memory. Most of the time, you can ignore these alerts. Some applications may use high memory while performing certain tasks, like trying to access the Internet, or display a page with lot of rich media content.

If you receive alerts from other applications, make sure that you have the latest version of those applications. Also run Windows updates to install all the available updates for your Windows.

If you receive frequent alerts from a particular component, and notice degraded computer performance, identify the component and take necessary action. When the alert appears, click the Details & Settings link to view additional details about the component. If the problem persists, we suggest that you upgrade your Norton product to the latest version.

STEP 1

Upgrade your Norton product

  1. Go to Norton Update Center.

  2. Click Update Me Now.

If the download does not start automatically, download the program manually.

  3. On the File Download - Security Warning window, click Run.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

If you are already running the latest version of your Norton product or if the problem persists, skip to step 2.

STEP 2

Download and run Norton Power Eraser

  1. Download Norton Power Eraser.

  2. Click Save.

  3. Select the location as Desktop, and then click Save.

  4. To run Norton Power Eraser, double click the NPE.exe file.

If the User Account Control window prompts, click Yes or Continue.

  5. Read the license agreement, and click Accept.

  6. In the Norton Power Eraser window, click the Scan for Risks icon.

  7. By default, Norton Power Eraser performs a Rootkit scan and requires a system restart. When you see a prompt to restart the computer, click Restart. If you do not want to include the Rootkit scan, go to Settings, and uncheck the option Include Rootkit scan (Requires a system restart).

  8. After the computer is restarted, the scan starts automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Alternatively, you can disable the performance alerts from your Norton product. To know more, read: Configuring performance alerts in my Norton product
