Fix problems with Norton taking more online space than the total size of the files in the backup set

After you configure your initial backup set and run the backup for the first time, the backup should not take more space than the total size of the files in your backup set. Subsequent incremental backup changes add to the overall total. When you run the backup, the files are processed in chunks in a local Temp folder before it is sent to the online backup location. So, it is recommended to have at least 500MB of free space in your Windows drive for the backups to run successfully. After the backup is complete, these files that are created in the Temp folder are removed automatically.

If you observe that your online backup consumes more space than the actual total data size, then it can be due to:

  • Incremental backups: New or changed files count towards the overall space used. These calculations are based on what you have selected for backup.

  • Multiple backup sets: Each backup set that is created, consumes online storage space. If you no longer need a particular backup set, you can either purge individual files and folders or delete the entire backup set. Note that deleting a backup set affects only the online content and does not delete the locally stored data.

  • Failed backups: Some failed backups may result in a successful transfer of some data within your backup sets. You can either run a manual backup so a complete backup is transferred or opt to delete files from online storage.
