Web browsing is slow or web browser takes a long time to start

You might be wondering why your Internet speed is lower than that is offered by your service provider or why websites are loading slowly of late. There are several reasons that can cause your Internet connection to be slow or for your browser to take a long time to start.

  • Cluttered temporary Internet files

  • Virus infection

  • Unwanted browser add-ons

  • Weak WiFi signal

  • Multiple browser sessions

  • Multiple security products

Norton can help with some of the causes.

Before you follow the steps, make sure that you get your PC tuned up using Norton's performance features. For more information, read My computer runs slowly.


Find out the browser add-on that causes the slow down

    Unwanted add-ons on your browser may affect the browser load time. We recommend that you disable add-ons one at a time and find out which add-on causes the slow down.

  1. Start your browser.

  2. Depending on your browser, do one of the following:

    • For Internet Explorer: On the Tools menu, click Manage add-ons.

    • For Mozilla Firefox: On the top-right corner, click the Open menu icon, and click Add-ons. In the Add-ons Manager page, select Extensions.

    • For Google Chrome: On the top-right corner, click the Customize and control Google Chrome icon, and click Settings. Under Chrome, click Extensions.

  3. Select the add-ons one at a time and disable them.

    If the Internet slows down after adding a particular add-on, then keep it disabled.


Delete temporary Internet files

    Norton File Cleanup removes the temporary files for Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Over time, temporary files can significantly reduce the browsing speed.

  1. Start Norton.

    If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. In the Norton window, double-click Performance, and then click File Cleanup.

    The Firefox Cleanup option is enabled only when you have Firefox installed on your computer.

  3. After the temporary files are removed, click Close.

    To remove temporary Internet files on Google Chrome, go to next line. If you do not have Google Chrome installed, go to Step 3.

  4. To open the Clear browsing data window on Google Chrome, press the Ctrl + Shift + Del keys on your keyboard.

  5. In the Clear browsing data window, at the top, from the drop-down menu, select the beginning of time.

  6. The options are selected by default in the window. Click Clear browsing data.


Uninstall any non-Norton security product

    Each security software is designed to work independently on a computer. Multiple security solutions on a computer are generally not optimized to work together, resulting in performance degradation.

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.


  3. In the list of currently installed programs, select the non-Norton security product, and then click Uninstall or Remove.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  5. When the uninstall completes, restart the computer.


Download and run Norton Power Eraser

    Your computer may have an infection that can slow down the Internet connection or your browser. Run Norton Power Eraser to perform a deep scan and remove the infection.

  1. Download Norton Power Eraser.

  2. Click Save.

  3. Select the location as Desktop, and then click Save.

  4. To run Norton Power Eraser, double-click the NPE.exe file.

    If the User Account Control window prompts, click Yes or Continue.

  5. Read the license agreement, and click Accept.

  6. In the Norton Power Eraser window, click the Scan for Risks icon.

  7. By default, Norton Power Eraser performs a Rootkit scan and requires a system restart. When you see a prompt to restart the computer, click Restart. If you do not want to include the Rootkit scan, go to Settings, and uncheck the option Include Rootkit scan (requires a computer restart).

  8. After the computer is restarted, the scan starts automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions.

    Wait for the scan to complete.
