Message: "Norton Utilities 15.0 has encountered a problem and needs to close..." when I start Norton Utilities 15.0

STEP 1

Check for the Compatibility mode

  1. On the desktop, right-click Norton Utilities icon, and click Properties.

  2. On the Compatibility tab, make sure that Run this program in compatibility mode for: is unchecked.

  3. Click Apply > OK.

STEP 2

Enable Data Execution Prevention settings

  1. Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Click Performance and Maintenance, and click System.

  3. On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.

  4. On the Data Execution Prevention tab, select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.

  5. Click Add, and then locate the following Norton Utilities files one by one:

    • nu.exe

    • RMScrn.exe

    These files are located at C:\Program Files\Norton Utilities 15.

  6. Click Apply.

  7. Click OK to confirm.

  8. Click OK.

  9. Exit all the programs, and restart the computer.

    If the problem persists, go to Step 3.

STEP 3

Uninstall Microsoft VC++ 2005 Redistributable Package

  1. Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.

  3. Under currently installed programs, check if Microsoft VC++ 2005 Redistributable Package is listed, and then do one of the following:

    • If Microsoft VC++ 2005 Redistributable Package is listed, select it, and then click Remove.

    • If Microsoft VC++ 2005 Redistributable Package is not listed, go to Step 4.

  4. Click Yes to confirm.

STEP 4

Install Microsoft VC++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package

  1. Go to the Microsoft VC++ 2008 Redistributable Package download page.

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

  2. Download the file vcredist_x86.exe to your desktop.

  3. Double-click the file that you downloaded.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

  5. Exit all the programs, and restart your computer.
