Error: (8920,204) "Norton LiveUpdate was unable to install an update" when I run LiveUpdate in my Norton product

To check if the issue you are experiencing is related to a known system problem or outage, visit Norton Services Status page.

These steps are for the current version of the Norton products. If you have an older version or if you do not know your product version, go to Norton Update Center.


Turn off Network Cost Awareness

  1. Start your Norton product.

  2. Click Settings.

  3. Under Detailed Settings, click Firewall. On the General Settings tab, next to Network Cost Awareness, move the slider to Off.

  4. Click Apply, and then Close.

    If the problem persists, then go to Step 2.


Update your virus definitions using Intelligent Updater

  1. Go to the Intelligent Updater downloads page.

  2. To choose the correct definition set, you need to know the name and version of your Norton product and the version of Windows.

  3. Depending on your version of Windows and Norton product, download the appropriate definition set.

    Norton product version

    Windows 32-bit platform

    Windows 64-bit platform

    22.7 and later

    e.g. 20160718-008-core3sdsv5i32.exe

    e.g. 20160718-008-core3sdsv5i64.exe

    22.6 and earlier

    e.g. 20160718-008-v5i32.exe

    e.g. 20160718-008-v5i64.exe

  4. Save the file to the Windows desktop.

  5. On the desktop, double-click the file that you downloaded.

  6. In the Symantec Intelligent Updater window, click Yes to continue.

  7. When Intelligent Updater finishes updating the definitions, click OK.

    If the problem persists, go to Step 3.


Uninstall any non-Symantec security product

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.


  3. In the list of currently installed programs, select the non-Symantec security product, and then click Uninstall or Remove.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  5. When the uninstall process completes, restart the computer.

    If you continue to see the error message when you run LiveUpdate, wait for 24 hours and then run LiveUpdate again.
