Norton is actively preparing for the next generation of cybersecurity by evaluating and improving post-quantum-resistant protections for VPN connections. Post-quantum cryptography is designed to help protect encrypted data against future quantum-computing threats, including scenarios in which attackers collect encrypted traffic today in the hope of decrypting it later. Our work includes strengthening key exchange protections in Norton VPN technologies and planning phased client updates where needed.
What is Post-Quantum Encryption?
Post-Quantum Encryption is a newer type of cryptographic protection designed to help keep data secure against both today’s computers and future quantum computers. In simple terms, it is meant to strengthen the protection of secure connections as computing technology continues to evolve.
Why is Norton introducing this feature?
Norton is introducing this feature to prepare for future security risks. Some of the encryption methods widely used today could become more vulnerable once quantum computing becomes powerful enough. One concern is a “harvest now, decrypt later” scenario, in which encrypted internet traffic is collected today and potentially decrypted in the future using more advanced technology.

The purpose of Post-Quantum Encryption is to provide stronger, future-ready protection for Norton VPN connections. It helps strengthen the security of session keys, supporting better long-term confidentiality for VPN traffic.
How can this help customers?
This feature helps customers by improving long-term privacy protection. It reduces the risk that encrypted data protected today could become easier to break in the future as technology advances. This can be especially valuable when using public Wi-Fi or other untrusted networks, where protecting personal data is especially important.
Post-Quantum Encryption is a future-ready security feature in Norton VPN that helps protect encrypted connections against emerging quantum-computing threats. It was introduced to reduce long-term risks, such as “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks, in which encrypted data captured today could be targeted in the future. On supported Norton VPN connections that use WireGuard and Mimic, customers can benefit from this protection. IPsec and OpenVPN are not supported.
