Fixing Norton apps stopped by Android battery optimization

This article applies to the following Android Norton apps: Norton360 and Norton VPN.

To improve performance, some Android devices force apps to stop when your device screen turns off. This often causes apps to lose the Accessibility permission.

In this case, you need to manually re-enable the permission to maintain full app functionality. To re-enable the Accessibility permission, open your device settings, search for Accessibility, then grant this permission to your Norton Android app.

We recommend changing your device settings to prevent the app from losing the permission. Follow the relevant steps below according to your device:

Asus

  1. Open your device Settings.
  2. Tap Battery, then tap Auto-start Manager.
  3. On the Downloaded tab, set your Norton apps to be allowed to auto-start when the device boots.

Further recommendations

  1. Open your device Mobile Manager, then go to PowerMasterSettings (or Battery-saving options).
  2. Switch the following options OFF:
    • Clean up in suspend
    • Auto-deny apps from auto starting

Huawei

Follow the below, depending on what matches your device setup and EMUI version:

Smart Tune-up

  1. Open System Manager and tap the cogwheel icon in the upper-right corner.
  2. Disable the Smart tune-up feature.

App Launch (EMUI 8, 9, and 10)

  1. Open your device Settings, then go to BatteryApp Launch.
  2. Tap the slider next to your Norton app to switch it from automatic to manual.
  3. In the dialog that appears, ensure Auto launch and Run in background are enabled.

Startup manager

  1. Open your device Settings, then go to AllStartup manager.
  2. Ensure the slider next to your Norton app is ON to allow the app to run automatically when the phone starts.

Battery optimization (EMUI 9 and later)

  1. Open your device Settings, then go to Battery optimization.
  2. Tap the down arrow next to Don't allow, then tap All apps, find your Norton app and select Don't allow.

Battery optimization (EMUI 5 and 8)

  1. Open your device Settings, then search for Ignore battery optimization .
  2. Tap the down arrow next to Allow, then tap All apps, find your Norton app and select Allow.

Huawei (EMUI 6 and earlier)

  1. Tap the Phone Manager icon on your device's Home screen.
  2. Go to Settings and select the Protected apps tab.
  3. Turn on the protection for your Norton app.

Lenovo / Lenovo Zuk

Follow steps A, B, or C below, depending what matches your device navigation:

    1. Open your device Settings.
    2. Select Background app management.
    3. Deselect your Norton app.
    4. Open your device Settings and select Apps.
    5. Choose your Norton app, then tap Battery.
    6. Disable Battery optimization.
    7. Open Advanced Settings and select Battery.
    8. Tap Battery Optimization.
    9. Tap your Norton app and select OFF.

Nokia

  1. Open your device's System settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then select your Norton app.
  3. Tap Battery and select Don't optimize.

Further recommendations

If you continue to experience issues, ensure that Battery Saver is not enabled:

  1. Open your device's System settings and select Battery.
  2. Ensure Battery Saver is disabled.

OnePlus

Follow these steps on your OnePlus device:

  1. Go to System SettingsApps, and tap the gear icon. Choose Special AccessBattery Optimization and disable this feature.
  2. Go to Phone SettingsBatteryBattery Optimization. Choose All apps in the menu at the top of the screen, then tap your Norton app and select Don't optimize.

On older OnePlus devices, follow the alternative steps below:

  1. Open your device Settings and select BatteryBattery optimization.
  2. Tap Menu (three dots), then disable Enhanced optimization (or Advanced optimization).

Further recommendations

Certain OnePlus devices include the App Auto-Launch feature, which prevents apps from running in the background. To disable this feature:

  1. Open device Settings on your OnePlus device and go to AppsApp auto-launch.
  2. Tap the slider next to your Norton app so that it turns gray (OFF).

Oppo

The following steps are for Oppo F1S. Other models may differ.

Change the Auto-launch settings for your Norton app:

  1. On your device, go to SettingsApp managementAuto-launch apps.
  2. Tap the slider beside your Norton app so that it turns ON.

Change the Battery usage settings for your Norton app:

  1. On your device, go to SettingsApp managementApp list.
  2. Choose your Norton app and tap Battery usageRun in Background.

Further recommendations

It is also recommended to complete the following steps:

  • Pin your app to the recent apps screen.
  • Enable your app in the app list inside the security app's startup manager and floating app list.
  • Turn off battery optimizations.
  • Give the service a persistent notification to remain in the foreground.

Samsung

The following steps are only available for devices running Android 12 or older.

Follow the relevant steps below according to your Android version:

Samsung (Android 15 and 16)

  1. Open your device Settings and tap Battery (or Battery and device care, depending on your One UI version).
  2. Tap Background usage limits, then select Never sleeping apps (or Never auto sleeping apps).
  3. Tap + (the plus icon) in the top-right corner, then select your Norton app.
  4. Tap Add to add the app to the list. Alternatively, you can navigate to the app's individual settings: Go to Settings Apps, select your Norton app, tap Battery, and select Unrestricted

Samsung (Android 13 and 14)

  1. Open your device Settings and tap Battery.
  2. Tap Background usage limits, then select Never auto sleeping apps.
  3. Tap + (the plus icon) in the top-right corner, then select your Norton app.
  4. Tap Add to add the app to the list.

Samsung (Android 11 and 12)

  1. Open your device Settings and tap Battery and device care.
  2. Tap Battery, then select Background usage limits.
  3. Tap Never sleeping apps.
  4. Tap + (the plus icon) in the top-right corner, then select your Norton Norton app.
  5. Tap Add to add the app to the list.

Samsung (Android 10)

  1. Open your device Settings and tap Device care.
  2. Tap Battery, then select App power management.
  3. Tap Apps that won't be put to sleep, then select your Norton app.
  4. Tap Done to confirm.

Samsung (Android 9)

  1. Open your device Settings and tap Apps.
  2. Tap Menu (three dots) in the top-right corner, then select Special access.
  3. Select Optimise battery usage, then tap the drop-down menu at the top of the screen and select All.
  4. Tap the blue (ON) slider next to your Norton app so that it turns white (OFF).

Samsung (Android 6, 7, and 8)

  1. Open your device Settings and tap Device maintenance.
  2. Tap Battery, then scroll down and select Unmonitored apps.
  3. Tap Add apps, then select your Norton app. Tap Done to confirm.

Sony Xperia

  1. Open your device Settings and tap Battery.
  2. Tap Menu (three dots) in the top-right corner, then select Battery optimization or Power saving exceptions.
  3. Tap the Apps tab and tick your Norton app.

Xiaomi

Follow the relevant steps below according to your MIUI version:

MIUI 14

  1. Open your device Settings, then go to Apps.
  2. Find your Norton app, then go to App permissions and ensure Background autostart is enabled.

MIUI 11 and 12

  1. Open your device Settings and go to AppsManage apps.
  2. Tap your Norton app.
  3. Ensure that Autostart is enabled.
  4. Tap Other permissions and ensure the following permissions are enabled:
    • Show on lock screen
    • Display pop-up window
    • Display pop-up windows while running in the background
  1. Tap the back arrow, then tap Battery Saver and select No restrictions.

MIUI 9 and 10

  1. Open either your device Settings, Installed apps, or App Management.
  2. Tap your Norton app and ensure Autostart is enabled.
  3. Tap Other permissions.
  4. Ensure Show on lock screen and Start in background are enabled.
  5. Tap the back arrow, then tap Battery Saver and select No restrictions.

MIUI 8

  1. Open either your device Settings, Installed apps, or App Management.
  2. Tap your Norton app, then select Other permissions.
  3. Ensure Show on lock screen and Start in background are enabled.
  4. Return to your main device Settings screen.
  5. Select BatteryManage apps battery usage.
  6. Tap Choose apps, select your Norton app, then select No restrictions.

Vivo

Change the power consumption settings for your Norton app:

  1. On your Vivo device, go to SettingsBattery.
  2. Select High background power consumption (or Background power consumption management).
  3. Tap the slider next to your Norton app so that it turns ON.

It is also recommended to complete the following steps:

  • Lock the app in the task bar by swiping the app icon down and tapping the lock icon when the Norton app is open in the background.
  • Allow your Norton app Autostart permissions:
    • New OS version: Enable the Autostart permission by going to SettingsMore settingsApplicationsAutostart.
    • Funtouch OS 2.6 and lower: Enable the Autostart permission by going to i ManagerApp managerAutostart manager.

Other devices

The exact way to perform these steps differs based on your device model and Android version. The instructions below contain generic advice only.

  1. Open your device settings and go to apps or app management.
  2. Select your Norton app.
