Learn more about Quarantine on Mac

When your Norton product detects a threat that cannot be eliminated with the latest virus definitions, it quarantines impacted files so they cannot spread or infect your Mac. You cannot view files in the Finder or use them if quarantined.

If you have an item that you think is infected but is not identified as a risk by Norton, you can manually add the item to Quarantine.

You can attempt to repair the quarantined item if a new virus definition is received. Some quarantined items are successfully disinfected after your Norton product rescans them. You can also restore such items. When you restore a file from Quarantine, your Norton product moves the file back to its original location. Alternatively, you can restore the file to another location on your Mac.

We recommend not to restore the quarantined files unless you are sure they are safe. If you restore an item to a directory other than its original location, it may not function properly. You cannot restore a quarantined file or folder if you uninstall your Norton product from your Mac.

Quarantine an item manually

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

  2. On the left pane, click Security.

  3. In the Security dashboard, click Quarantine.

  4. Click Add a new File, locate the file on your Mac, and click Open.

Restore or delete an item from quarantine

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

  2. On the left pane, click Security.

  3. In the Security dashboard, click Quarantine.

  4. Select the relevant file(s) in Quarantine.

  5. Hover your cursor over the quarantined file, click (the three dots icon), and then select Restore or Restore as.

  6. If you selected Restore as, choose a new location for the file, then click Open.

  7. If prompted, enter your Mac administrator password and click OK.

    The file is restored and can now be opened from the selected location on your Mac.

  8. If you want to delete a file from Quarantine permanently, select the relevant file in Quarantine and then click Delete.

Submit an item to Norton for evaluation

You can send files to Norton Security Response for further analysis. We recommend sending the following file types:

  • Potential malware: Files that your Norton product has not identified as malware but you believe may be malicious.

  • False positive: Files that your Norton product has identified as malware but you believe may be clean.

    Personally identifiable information is never included in submissions. In most cases, we will process the file without sending a response to you.

Submit an item to Norton for evaluation

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

  2. On the left pane, click Security.

  3. In the Security dashboard, click Quarantine.

  4. Select the relevant file(s) in Quarantine.

  5. Hover your cursor over the quarantined file, click (the three dots icon), and then select Send for analysis.

  6. Select either Potentially malware or Potentially a false detection, not a malware, and enter any additional information about the file into the text box, then click Send.
