Learn more about Windows 7 SP1 August update and Norton protection

Microsoft had released an update to Windows 7 SP1 on August 13th, 2019 where the Microsoft Windows Updates are now SHA-2 signed instead of SHA-1 signed. To know more, read the Microsoft article 2019 SHA-2 Code Signing Support requirement for Windows and WSUS.

Symantec had identified the potential for a negative interaction between Norton and the changes explained within the Microsoft article. Symantec and Microsoft had worked together and decided not to apply this update until potential issues are resolved.

The issues are now resolved, and an update has been released for Norton on August 20th. Run Norton LiveUpdate until there are no further updates available, and restart the computer. Your Windows 7 SP1 should resume the Windows updates depending on the schedule that you have selected.

Run LiveUpdate

  1. Start Norton.

If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. On the main window, click Security, and then click LiveUpdate.

  3. When Norton LiveUpdate is finished, click OK.

  4. Run LiveUpdate again until you see the message, "Your Norton product has the latest protection updates."

  5. Exit all programs, and restart the computer.
