Am I protected against the WannaCry ransomware?

What is the WannaCry ransomware?

WannaCry encrypts data files and asks users to pay a US$300 ransom in bitcoins. The ransom note indicates that the payment amount will be doubled after three days. If payment is not made after seven days, the encrypted files will be deleted. For more information, read the Symantec blog on Ransomware: 5 dos and don'ts.

Am I protected against this threat?

Symantec and Norton users are protected against WannaCry ransomware. Run LiveUpdate to ensure that you have the latest virus definitions.

Run LiveUpdate

  1. Start your Norton product.

  2. In the main window, click Security, and then click LiveUpdate.

  3. When Norton LiveUpdate is finished, click OK.

  4. Run LiveUpdate until you see the message, "Your Norton product has the latest protection updates."

  5. Exit all the programs, and restart the computer.
