Norton from Symantec

The scan results show "Unable to take required System Restore Point" next to Registry Cleanup in Norton 360

This problem can happen if your computer does not have enough free disk space to create a restore point. Run Windows System Restore and check whether you can create the restore point.

STEP 1

Create a restore point

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    rstrui.exe

  3. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

    • For Windows 8/7/Vista: Click Open System Protection.

    • For Windows XP: Click Create a restore point > Next.

  4. Enter a description for the restore point, and then click Create.

  5. If you can create the restore point successfully, run Registry Cleanup again.

If you cannot create the restore point, then increase free disk space and try to create the restore point. Run Registry Cleanup after you create the restore point successfully.

You may also disable the Windows System Restore, backup the Windows registry manually, and run Registry Cleanup. Go to step 2.

STEP 2

Turn off Windows System Restore

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    sysdm.cpl

If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.

  3. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

    • For Windows 8/7: On the System Protection tab, under Protection Settings, select the drives for which you want to disable System Restore, and then click Configure.

    • For Windows Vista: On the System Protection tab, under Automatic Restore Points, uncheck the drives for which you want to disable System Restore.

Click Turn System Restore Off. Go to line 5.

    • For Windows XP: On the System Restore tab, check Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.

If you do not see the System Restore tab, you are not logged on to Windows as an Administrator. Go to line 5.

  4. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

    • For Windows 8: Select Disable system protection.

    • For Windows 7: Select Turn off system protection.

  5. Click Apply.

  6. When you see the confirmation message, click Yes.

  7. Click OK.

STEP 3

Backup the Windows registry

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    regedit

If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.

  3. On the File menu, click Export.

  4. In the File name box, type a name that you will remember, such as Registry Backup.

  5. Select a location where you want to save the Registration Entries (.reg) file.

  6. Click Save.

Keep the backup file for a week or so, until you are sure that the changes that you made have not caused any problems.

STEP 4

Run Registry Cleanup

  1. Start your Norton product.

  2. Click Tasks.

  3. Under PC Tuneup Tasks, click Run Registry Cleanup.
