Windows does not start after running Clean Your Registry or Defragment Your Registry in Norton Utilities

Restore Windows Registry hives

  1. Insert the Windows installation disk into the CD/DVD drive, and then start the computer.

    If you see a prompt, press a key to boot from the Windows installation disk.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • For Windows 8: On the Choose an option screen, click Troubleshoot, and then click Advanced Options.

    • For Windows 7 or Vista: Select the language, time, currency, keyboard, or an input method, click Next.

      Click Repair your computer, select the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • For Windows 8: Under Advanced Options, click Command Prompt.

    • For Windows 7 or Vista: In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.

  4. On the command prompt, type the following and then press Enter:

    cd C:\windows\system32\config

    On Windows 10: cd C:\windows\system32\config\regback

  5. On the command prompt, type the following to list the contents of the Config folder:

    dir

  6. Make a note of all the files that are listed with .rmbak extension.

  7. On the command prompt, type the following command to rename the current registry hive, and then press Enter:

    ren software software.old

  8. Repeat line 7 to rename all the registry hives that have the backups with .rmbak extension inside the Config folder.

  9. On the command prompt, type the following to restore the backup copy of registry hive:

    ren software.rmbak software

  10. Repeat line 9 and rename all the files with .rmbak extension inside the Config folder that you have noted.

  11. Remove the Windows installation disk, and restart your computer.
