Configuring shared Windows folders for maximum network protection

STEP 1

Configure the shared Windows folders for maximum network protection

  1. Press the Windows + E keys to open the My Computer window.

  2. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

    • On Windows 10/8/7: Right-click drive C, and select Share with and then Advanced Sharing

    • On Windows Vista: Right-click drive C, and click Share...

    • On Windows XP: Right-click drive C, and click Sharing and Security...

  3. In the Local Disk (C:) Properties window, under Sharing tab, click Advanced Sharing.

    If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.

  4. In the Advanced Sharing window, check if Share this folder option is checked. To disable sharing, uncheck it.

    On Windows XP: Click the link "If you understand the risk but still want to share . . . " if present.

    In the Network Sharing and Security section, examine to see if either of the two check boxes is checked. To disable sharing, uncheck them.

  5. Click Apply and then click OK.

  6. In the Local Disk (C:) Properties window, click Close.

STEP 2

Configure Advanced Share settings

    The Windows Advanced share settings is not available on Windows XP.

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

  3. In the Control Panel window, on the top-right corner, in the search box, type network, and then click Network and Sharing Center.

  4. In the left pane, click Change advanced sharing settings. Click the arrow button to expand the All Networks profile and view the Public folder sharing options.

    On Windows Vista: Under Sharing and Discovery, click the arrow button to expand the Public folder sharing options.

  5. Under Public folder sharing, select one of the available options, and click Save changes or Apply.

    If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.
