Disabling or enabling Windows System Restore

STEP 1

Turn off Windows System Restore

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    sysdm.cpl

    If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.

  3. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

    • For Windows 10/8/7: On the System Protection tab, under Protection Settings, select the drives for which you want to disable System Restore, and then click Configure.

    • For Windows Vista: On the System Protection tab, under Automatic Restore Points, uncheck the drives for which you want to disable System Restore.

      Click Turn System Restore Off. Go to line 5.

    • For Windows XP: On the System Restore tab, check Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.

      If you do not see the System Restore tab, you are not logged on to Windows as an Administrator. Go to line 5.

  4. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

    • For Windows 10/8: Select Disable system protection.

    • For Windows 7: Select Turn off system protection.

  5. Click Apply.

  6. When you see the confirmation message, click Yes.

  7. Click OK.

STEP 2

Turn on Windows System Restore

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    sysdm.cpl

    If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.

  3. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

    • For Windows 10/8/7: On the System Protection tab, under Protection Settings, select the drives for which you want to enable System Restore, and then click Configure.

    • For Windows Vista: On the System Protection tab, under Automatic Restore Points, check the drives for which you want to enable System Restore. Go to line 5.

    • For Windows XP: On the System Restore tab, uncheck Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.

      If you do not see the System Restore tab, you are not logged on to Windows as an Administrator. Go to line 5.

  4. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

    • For Windows 10/8: Select Turn on system protection.

    • For Windows 7: Select Restore system settings and previous versions of files.

  5. Click Apply.

  6. If you see the confirmation message, click Yes.

  7. Click OK.
