Error: "Compact failed" when you defragment your Windows Registry in Norton Utilities 14.0

STEP 1

Login as administrator

  1. Exit all the programs, and restart your computer.

  2. At the logon screen, select the account that has Administrator rights.

    You may need to type a password. If you are not sure how to do this, contact the person or company that set up your computer.

    If the problem persists, go to STEP 2

STEP 2

Start the computer in safe mode

  1. Exit all programs

  2. Do one of the following depending on your operating system:

    • For Windows 7 or Vista: Click the Start button, and then click All Programs > Accessories > Run.

    • For Windows XP: Click Start > Run.

  3. In the Run dialog box, type the following text:

    msconfig

  4. Click OK.

    If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.

  5. Do one of the following depending on your operating system:

    • For Windows 7 or Vista: In the System Configuration Utility window, on the Boot tab, check Safe boot.

    • For Windows XP: In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI tab, check /SAFEBOOT.

  6. Click OK.

  7. When you are asked to restart the computer, click Restart.

    The computer restarts in Safe mode. This can take several minutes.

STEP 3

Defragment your Windows registry

  1. Start Norton Utilities.

    If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.

  2. Click Defragment Your Registry.

  3. In the right pane, click Defragment Your Registry.

  4. If you want to create a System Restore Point, check Create System Restore Point.

  5. Click Yes to start the registry defragmentation.

    Norton Utilities analyzes the registry, and shows the compacting result.

  6. Click Compact Now.

  7. Click Restart.

STEP 4

Start the computer in Normal mode

  1. Exit all programs.

  2. Do one of the following depending on your operating system:

    • For Windows 7 or Vista: Click the Start button, and then click All Programs > Accessories > Run.

    • For Windows XP: Click Start > Run.

  3. In the Run dialog box, type the following text:

    msconfig

  4. Click OK.

    If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.

  5. Do one of the following depending on your operating system:

    • For Windows 7 or Vista: In the System Configuration Utility window, on the Boot tab, uncheck Safe boot.

    • For Windows XP: In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck /SAFEBOOT.

  6. Click OK.

  7. When you are asked to restart the computer, click Restart.

    The computer restarts in normal mode. This can take several minutes.
