Starting your computer in Safe mode

STEP 1

Start the computer in safe mode

    You can use Windows Advanced Options menu in Windows 7/Vista/XP to start the computer in Safe mode. Restart the computer, and as soon as the computer starts, begin to tap the F8 key until the boot menu appears. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select Safe mode, and then press Enter. If prompted, log on as administrator. If you are unable to start the computer in Safe mode using F8 key, go to line 1.

  1. Exit all the programs.

  2. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  3. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    msconfig

    If the User Account Control window appears, click Yes or Continue.

  4. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

    • For Windows 8/7/Vista: In the System Configuration Utility window, on the Boot tab, check Safe boot

    • For Windows XP: In the System Configuration Utility window, on the BOOT.INI tab, check /SAFEBOOT

  5. Click OK.

  6. When you are asked to restart the computer, click Restart.

    The computer restarts in the Safe mode which takes several minutes.

After you complete the work in Safe mode, use the System Configuration Utility to start your computer in Normal mode. Go to STEP 2.

STEP 2

Start the computer in Normal mode

  1. Exit all the programs.

  2. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

  3. Type in the following text, and then press Enter.

    msconfig

    If the User Account Control window appears, click Yes or Continue.

  4. Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the following:

    • For Windows 8/7/Vista: In the System Configuration Utility window, on the Boot tab, Uncheck Safe boot

    • For Windows XP: In the System Configuration Utility window, on the BOOT.INI tab, Uncheck /SAFEBOOT

  5. Click OK.

  6. Close all programs, and restart the computer.

    The computer restarts in the Normal mode which takes several minutes.
