Error: "Unable to attach to specified device" when launching a pcAnywhere host

  1. This error message could be transient and might be resolved by running LiveUpdate, restarting pcAnywhere, rebooting your computer, or reinstalling pcAnywhere.

    If you have not already done so, try restarting both the host and client computers. This solves many issues without requiring further action.

    If you are using a modem, you may want to update the modem driver. Visit the Web page for the your modem manufacturer for the latest driver. After updating the modem driver, restart the computer. If you are using a TCP/IP connection, you may also need to reinstall your TCP/IP stack. Contact your ISP for help with this task.

    There could also be a conflict between pcAnywhere and some other program on your computer. Perform a clean boot to determine if there is a conflict.

  2. In some cases the Telephony Application Programming Interface (TAPI) could have problems. Corruption in the operating system could cause this problem. You may want to repair your version of Windows using the install CD. For more information on this process, contact Microsoft technical support.
