Protection against the Petya ransomware

What is the Petya ransomware?

Petya has been in existence since 2016. It differs from typical ransomware; as it doesn't just encrypt files, it also overwrites and encrypts the master boot record (MBR). In this latest attack, a ransom note demanding $300 in bitcoins be paid to recover files is displayed on infected computers. For more information, read about Petya ransomware outbreak.

Am I protected against this threat?

Symantec and Norton users are protected against Petya ransomware. Run LiveUpdate to ensure that you have the latest virus definitions and then run a full system scan.


Run LiveUpdate

  1. Start Norton.

  2. In the main window, click Security, and then click LiveUpdate.

  3. When Norton LiveUpdate is finished, click OK.

  4. Run LiveUpdate until you see the message, "Your Norton product has the latest protection updates."

  5. Exit all the programs, and restart the computer.


Run Full System Scan

  1. Start Norton.

  2. In the main window, click Security, and then click Scans.

  3. In the Scans window, select Full System Scan and click Go.

  4. When the scan is finished, click Finish.
