Configure Norton VPN settings on Mac

Choose from the below options to configure Norton VPN settings using your Norton device security for Mac.

Change your geographic location

By default, Norton VPN automatically picks the optimal regional data center based on your location. You can manually change the selected region from location settings.

  1. Open your Norton device security app.

  2. On the left pane, click Privacy.

  3. In the Privacy dashboard, in the Secure VPN tile, click Open.

  4. Click the Status tab.

  5. Next to the region, click the drop-down arrow and select the geographic region that you want from the list.

Block Ad Tracker

Each mobile device has a unique advertising ID which may be used to track your details like name, address, and age. Advertising IDs may be used by app developers to create targeted advertisements that are relevant to you. The Ad Tracking feature in Norton VPN protects you and blocks targeted advertisements.

  1. Open your Norton device security app.

  2. On the left pane, click Privacy.

  3. Under the Secure VPN tile, click Open.

  4. Click the Tracker Blocking tab.

  5. Next to Tracker Blocker, move the slider to enable Tracker Blocking.

Automatically Turn on VPN

The Auto Connect feature safeguards your data when connecting to public networks and hides your real identity.

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

  2. On the left pane, click Privacy.

  3. In the Privacy dashboard, in the Secure VPN tile, click Open.

  4. Click the Settings tab.

  5. Under Auto Connect, choose one of the following:

    • When connecting to public or compromised networks: VPN will turn on automatically when connecting to untrusted or compromised networks.
    • Never, I will turn on manually: Your Norton product notifies you to turn on the VPN when connecting to untrusted or compromised networks.

Kill Switch

Kill Switch blocks or kills your Internet connection should the VPN get disconnected. This helps maintain the privacy of your IP address (key to identifying your location and online activities) and other personal information should the VPN connection drop.

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

  2. On the left pane, click Privacy.

  3. In the Privacy dashboard, in the Secure VPN tile, click Open.

  4. Click the Settings tab.

  5. Under Connection settings section, next to Kill Switch, move the slider to turn on to block all internet access until VPN is reconnected.

Allow access to local devices

The Enable local device access when using VPN feature allows access to local devices like printers and shared devices on private networks.

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

  2. On the left pane, click Privacy.

  3. In the Privacy dashboard, in the Secure VPN tile, click Open.

  4. Click the Settings tab.

  5. Under the Connection settings section, next to Access Local Devices with Kill Switch, move the slider to turn on to allow access to local devices.

Show Notifications

The Show Notifications option notifies you when your VPN is turned on or off or when your computer is connected to public networks.

  1. Open your Norton device security product.

  2. On the left pane, click Privacy.

  3. In the Privacy dashboard, in the Secure VPN tile, click Open.

  4. Click the Settings tab.

  5. Under Show Notifications, move the slider of the following options to turn on notifications:

    • When VPN is turned on or off

    • When connected to untrusted networks

VPN Protocol Settings

VPN protocols are a set of rules that inform how data is going to be transmitted from your device.

  1. Open your Norton device security app.

  2. On the left pane, click Privacy.

  3. In the Privacy dashboard, in the Secure VPN tile, click Open.

  4. Click the Settings tab and under the VPN Protocol Settings section, choose one of the following:

    • Automatic: The best protocol will be selected and will switch automatically to improve the security and stability of your connection.

    • IPSec: Secure network protocol suite used to secure connections between devices.

    • WireGuard: A secure and speedy open-source protocol.

    • Mimic: A fast and secure protocol made by our experts to bypass VPN restrictions.

IP Rotation

The IP Rotation feature in Norton VPN automatically changes your IP address regularly to help prevent tracking, avoid targeted ads, and increase anonymity. It improves your anonymity by masking your real IP address and making it harder for third parties to track or profile you. It can also help you access more diverse and accurate data and content online, as some websites may show different results based on your IP address. The IP address will automatically change every 30 seconds.

  1. Open your Norton device security app.

  2. On the left pane, click Privacy.

  3. In the Privacy dashboard, in the Secure VPN tile, click Open.

  4. Click the Status tab, and next to the region, click the drop-down arrow

  5. In the Change VPN Location window, under Advanced Servers, click IP Rotation. If you see an IP Rotation prompt, click Connect.

Double VPN

Double VPN is an advanced security feature that routes your online traffic through two VPN servers, thereby providing greater privacy and anonymity. 

  1. Open Norton device security on your desktop.

  2. In the Norton dashboard, click Privacy.

  3. In the Privacy window, under Secure VPN, click Open.

  4. In the Secure VPN window, click the drop-down list next to the selected country.

  5. In the Change VPN location, under Advanced Servers, click Double VPN.

  5. In the Tracker Blocking tab, move the slider to enable Tracker Blocking.

  3. In the Privacy window, under Secure VPN, click Open.

  4. In the Secure VPN window, click the Tracker Blocking tab.

  5. In the Tracker Blocking tab, move the slider to enable Tracker Blocking.

Manually change your IP address

You can also manually enable IP rotation on your Windows or Mac device. Follow the steps below to enable IP rotation manually:

  1. Open your Norton device security app.

  2. On the left pane, click Security.

  3. In the Privacy dashboard, in the Secure VPN tile, click Open.

  4. Click the Status tab and click Refresh IP.

Install Norton VPN extension on your browser

The Norton VPN browser extension allows you to connect to your VPN without opening the VPN app. The extension also allows you to block advertisements while browsing.

Before installing the extension, ensure your browser is up to date.

  1. Open your Norton device security app

  2. On the left pane, click Privacy.

  3. In the Privacy dashboard, in the Secure VPN tile, click Open.

  4. Click the Ad Blocking tab.

  5. Click Install next to the browser in which you want the extension to be installed.

You can also search for Norton VPN - Fast and Secure browser extension directly on the respective extension store and proceed with the installation.

Depending on your browser, select one of the following to install the Norton VPN browser extension:

Google Chrome

  1. On the Chrome web store page that appears, click Add to Chrome.

    In the pop-up that appears, click Add Extension.

  2. Norton VPN extension is now installed on your Google Chrome browser.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. On the Mozilla Firefox Add-ons page that appears, click Add to Firefox.

    In the pop-up that appears, click Add.

  2. Norton VPN extension is now installed on your Mozilla Firefox browser.

    After the installation, if you see the Let us improve your experience screen, click Agree.

Pause your Norton VPN connection

The Pause VPN feature in Norton VPN allows you to pause your VPN connection for as long as you need and resume automatically. This feature allows you to temporarily suspend your VPN connection for a specified duration and automatically reconnect after a specific period of time. It is useful for accessing trusted local resources, resolving connectivity issues, or briefly bypassing the VPN for specific apps or websites without compromising long-term privacy by resuming the VPN connection automatically. You can select a specific period of time you want to pause your VPN connection.

  1. Open your Norton device security app.

  2. On the left pane, click Privacy.

  3. In the Privacy dashboard, under the Secure VPN tile, click Pause.

    The Pause option appears only when you are connected to Norton VPN.
  4. In the drop-down list that appears, select the duration you want to pause the VPN for.

    • 15 minutes

    • 30 minutes

    • 60 minutes

    Pause VPN is supported only on the WireGuard and Mimic protocols on iOS.
