Dispute information on your credit report

To dispute an inquiry posted, you will need to contact the associated bureau:




Through the online dispute submission process at https://dispute.transunion.com.


By toll-free telephone number at 800-916-8800. Customer service representatives are available Monday through Friday (excluding major holidays) from 8 am to 11 pm Eastern time. You should have a copy of your TransUnion Credit Report before calling this telephone number. The credit report will contain a File Identification Number (File Number) that will be needed by the representative helping you.

You will need to include the following information for your dispute:

  • Your TransUnion file number

  • Social Security Number

  • Date of Birth

  • Current Address

  • Company name of the disputed item (from your credit report)

  • Account number of the disputed item (from your credit report)

  • Reason for your dispute (such as, it is not your account; you have paid the account; etc.)


Please visit www.equifax.com and follow the link at the bottom of the page labeled 'Dispute info on credit report'.

This will take you to the dispute page where you will need to fill out the requested information and take an identity authentication quiz for security purposes. After that you will be shown your credit report. Select "Inquiries" from the navigation menu at the top of the page. Review the inquiries on your credit report and locate any fraudulent credit inquiries.

To dispute, click the "Dispute Item" link that is to the right of the entry and choose the box "This is a fraudulent inquiry." Click "Add Dispute." Follow these steps for all fraudulent inquiries. When complete, click "Dispute Summary" at the bottom of the page then click "Submit." Take note of your "Dispute Confirmation Number" so you can check on the status of your dispute with Equifax.




You will need to write a letter to Experian to complete your dispute:

You will need to include the following information for your dispute:

  • Your full name, including middle initial and any generational suffix (Jr., Sr., III, etc.)

  • Current mailing address (and any previous addresses used in the past two years)

  • Full Social Security number

  • Date of birth

  • A copy of your government issued identification card (driver's license, state ID card, military ID card, etc.)

  • A copy of a recent utility bill at your current address

Make sure each copy is legible (enlarge and/or lighten if necessary), displays your name and current mailing address, and the date of issue of the statement. The bureau is unable to accept credit card statements, voided checks, lease agreements, magazine subscriptions, or postal service forwarding orders as proof of residence. To protect your personal identification information, Experian does not typically return correspondence sent to them. Send copies of any documents you wish to provide and always retain your original documents. Mail your documents and letter requesting the fraudulent inquiry is removed to Experian.
