Learn more about File Insight for a downloaded file

Applicable for: Windows

The File Insight window lets you view the details of a file that you download. The information includes the general details, origin and lineage information, the resource usage, and the actions that the file has performed on your system.

The File Insight window has the following tabs:

Details

Displays the information such as the trust rating and community usage of the file, and when the file was released.

You can view the time frame details of the file's existence on your computer and the date on which the file was last used. You can also determine if a file is a startup file.

Norton analyzes specific information about a file such as the digital signature and the hash value to determine the confidence level of a file. Norton labels the trusted files as Norton Trusted. You can use the Check Trust Now option to determine the current confidence level of a file. You can also manually trust a file. For example, the confidence level of a file is unknown or not trusted and you know that the file belongs to a well-known application. In this case, you can manually trust the file by using the Trust Now option.

You can also view the community usage of a file to determine the legitimacy of the file. Norton uses a stringent statistical method to evaluate the trustworthiness of a file and to classify it as a good file.

Origin

Provides the lineage details of a file.

You can use the More Info link that is present under Origin to access the Norton Safe webpage. Here, you can view the security level of the website from where the file was downloaded. You can also view the website address from where the file was downloaded.

Activity

Provides the details about the resource usage and the suspicious behavior of a file.

The File Action option in the Show drop-down list is available for the files that are not safe. File actions provide the path where the infected file exists in your computer and the action that the Norton product has performed on the file.

The following options are available in the File Insight window:

Locate

Lets you obtain the file from the location in which it is saved on your computer.

Copy to Clipboard

Lets you copy the data from the File Insight window to the Clipboard.

After you copy the data to the Clipboard, you can open a document, paste the data, and save the document.

This option is available at the bottom of the window.
